  • How is being a software tester in Australia? vs software development and other software engineering fields

    • +6

As far as I know… shit pay, and you're competing a lot with international migrants who are willing to work for less.

Source: From what I've seen as a software developer working for the last 6 years.

      • +1

Nothing like that lol… Pay always depends on your level of expertise .. I myself is a developer and you have a wrong assumption

        • I meant Software Tester (as in, from what I've seen from my tester colleagues)

          • @NatoTomato: Testing space is gone to international - that is true. So does many manufacturing…
software developers are now responsible for software testing too. Either testers have to be engineers , automation, or they will be out of click click testing.

      • Is this about a software developer or software tester, or both?

        • +1

I meant Software Tester (as in, from what I've seen from my tester colleagues)

          • @NatoTomato: Hmm, but as long as software development exist, testers will always be required and the pay depends on how much you can negotiate

            • @Logda420: Yes, I agree… but a lot of employers will cut costs on software testers, generally leading to people straight out of school, or international people that need a job to keep their visa and are willing to work for less due to that benefit.

              • @NatoTomato: No mate, that is wrong.. Testers are hired based on their domain knowledge. You cannot hire a novice to do software testing and then expect bug free code. Those who are doing it… not sure what are they thinking but as far as I know, there is nothing fixed about the low pay.

Automation engineers (aka testers that code robots to automate the testing) are well sought after

      • Thats great to hear. Do you have more information on this or know where I can find out more?

        • +1

          Honestly i'd do two things;

          1. look for job descriptions (like on Seek) with this or similar QA titles and see what the keywords are to figure out the technologies you need to learn
          2. find someone doing the role, buy them lunch and ask them a ton of questions

Then, if you can handle self paced learning gather all the knowledge / training assoc with the keywords
If not, find courses / bootcamps with job entry programs that cover this or something similar

          (Personally, i'd avoid universities)

    • I have always had a bad feeling about software testing here in Australia. Bad processes are being mandated/followed, and bugs are overseen.

      • +1

That has nothing to do with Australia. Really depends where you work. Companies like Atlassian probably do a decent job of it.

        • +1

thanks. I meant in the companies I worked for. I haven't had a chance to work for Atlassian yet

    • +1

There's plenty of work around for software testers these days, especially for the more technical types (automation / performace etc). I don't think it will ever be as prevalent as development, but I'm yet to work for a company that employees as many testers as they do developers. A good tester is worth their weight in gold IMO, and you don't need to be super technical to get into it which makes it a pretty accessible pathway into an IT career.

    • +1

Depends on the company of course.
You get paid less than a dev, but the work is 'easier'. Also more annoying and repetitive but ymmv….
Definitely jobs out there, not everyone sticks with it long term due to the boring parts. Many of my friends have moved out into product management, or become more specialized in automation. Automation engineers sit between testers and devs in terms of pay and work but not everyone has the ability to build frameworks from scratch. Automation architects are very niche and highly sort after.
Testing is a step above support if you're trying to get into IT (harder to get into but easier than more technical areas, better pay than support, better work etc).

  • For a limited time? As in you enroll now and then revoke it after a week or two?

    • +1

No you can enroll for free but the course will return to being paid in short time, if you got it while free you can keep it.

      • No it is not limited time. I checked 10 random courses and every one has been always free.

    Thanks a lot OP
