Buying Toyota RAV4 Hybrid from website

Long story short.. paid a $1000 deposit for the RAV4 Hybrid 2WD Cruiser model… waiting time then was 1 year and a half..
got a message saying it is now over 2 years…
I've decided to change model to a 4WD and asked for a new contract….never sent…

My choices..
Either to get the new Xtrail epower TI or go with another dealership and put RAV4 Hybrid AWD cruiser waiting list…

Which website is good to buy a new car so that I dont have to deal with the dealerships…

    • And filter by high yield

    I ordered a petrol rav4 in Jan 2023 - delivered Mar 2023

    2 month turnaround

If you're adamant about hybrid be prepared to wait otherwise just call around

    • I ordered a petrol rav4 in Jan 2023 - delivered Mar 2023

      What trim though?

      • Base everything. It’s a Toyota don’t want to spend more than 42k

        • Well that's why you only had to wait two months. Pretty much everyone else wants a Cruiser trim with a hybrid drivetrain (like OP)

          • +2

@kerfuffle: I can sorta see the appeal for hybrid
Imo extra for trim is not worth it. It’s a Toyota. The interior is still a Toyota.

Even the hybrid surcharge will take around 10 years to break even. I think a lot of people are getting carried away

I have a hybrid. No regrets. Fuel consumption is literally half of my old car.

              • @kerfuffle: ok but..how does it compare to non hybrid equivalent

No point comparing to 1990 v8

                • +1

@ChatCPT: As I said, literally half. My old car was a 2011 Corolla sedan. My current one is a 2022 Corolla hybrid sedan.

            • +3

@ChatCPT: The Hybrid RAv4 costs only $2600 more than the petrol Rav4
Depending on how much you drive, it should be recovered in 3 to 5 years.

Also the petrol Rav4 is a 2L engine whereas the hybrid Rav4 has a 2.5L engine plus the electric motor.End result is it has a more powerful pickup and response.

I have a Rav4 Hybrid 2WD. Fuel consumption is 5.7 litres per 100 km in city. My old Camry V6 consumes 14 litres per 100 km in city.

    • Do i just call all Toyota dealerships?

      • Hybrid (2wd/4wd) = long waiting list, call the dealer to check which of those got shorter waiting.
        Petrol = short waiting list

      • Of course. Gotta put some effort in
        It’s a sellers market now

    • Wow . It took so long.
I ordered an Audi RS3 in Jan 2022 and received Mar 2023.

      • As they say ‘Euro trash’!I have a rental Q5 TDI Quattro, you can keep it, coming across the Sturt Highway on the way to Broken Hill, the low oil light comes on! WTF?And of course with the majority of Euro’s they do not have a dipstick, how dumb is that! It said I have to add a litre of oil, the car has only 8,000kms on the odo!So I go onto the MMi, and sure enough it is just on half.Ring up Hertz depot where I picked the thing up from, nah, she is fine mate it is due for its service(which it is not,15,000kms is it’s next service)guy had no idea what he was talking about.Get to Broken Hill, so I ring up the local Hertz/Thrifty agent.Ah,@ least a guy with some sense, yup, have had a few enquires regarding this on these Euros(BMW as well) he laughs when I tell him about the other guy,& completely understands my frustration, just tells me to by the correct spec oil & top the thing up(which I have done btw)when I get to Adelaide pop into Hertz in the city & they will refund my out of pocket expenses(this is also stated in the Rental agreement).Does not instil confidence in these things.Would I buy one? Hell no!If anything the Hertz depot should at least do a basic check. If the oil had got any lower, you are then advised not to drive it at all! Going to get a Prado next time! They can stick their ‘Owdy’s’ were the sun doesn’t shine! Rant over!!

        • I used to own two prados 120, 150 before.
These are okay, reliable so it take you from A to B. But these were slow and boring.
If it consumes too much oil, it means you accelerated hard as if there is no tomorrow before break-in finshied.
The RS3 and M cars are quite exciting and fun to drive.

          • @Apue: Highly unlikely that I ‘accelerated’ to hard. They are known to use oil, but a litre in a 7,000km vehicle? The vehicle had 7,000kms on it when picked up.(I did my due diligence & research on the things when this issue reared its ugly head.)

  • …..is it weird that I didnt pay a deposit at all on my Rav4 order?

    • Did you get it yet?
Maybe they’ll ask for the deposit closer to delivery date.

      • lol I most definitely have not got it - 5 months waiting - no contact. Maybe I need to ring them

        • Maybe you are at the end of the queue. ETA never?

  • +2

Sell it for 6k more when it arrived

  • +5

    Production delay on roof racks

  • +2

Waiting 2 years for a new car is sheer lunacy.

Waiting 2 years for a new Toyota, that's just down right friggin' dumb.

    • +1

What about not being able to order a 40 year old Toyota despite it being a current model?

      • To be fair I think it's 39 years 😳

        • +1

Yeah you’re right, forgot the 70 series was released in ‘84

      • You know there’s a difference between the 70 series from the 80’s and a 70 series built now, right?

        • +1

          Lol, no. No I don’t.

        • +2

You need to be a train spotter to pick the difference. The back axle is narrower than the front axle on newer models.

    • amen brother!
gone are the days of haggling the toyota down with mats and tints
now we wait 2 years for one and happily pay a deposit?

  • +1

My choices..Either to get the new Xtrail epower TI

Why would you put yourself through owning a knee-saan with a powertrain that makes no sense (and no power)?

Just some thoughts from our favourite you-tuber

    • Xtrail epower TI does not make financial sense as its more expensive than Rav4 hybrid and consumes more fuel.
But according to reviews it is much more smoother and quieter than a Rav4 hybrid and you dont have to wait 2 years. Also feels more premium inside.

However while toyota hybrid is considered very reliable, this epower tech long term reliability is unknown and Nissan reliability is not considered good nowadays.

      • However while toyota hybrid is considered very reliable

Even when using out of date battery technology (NiMH). Imagine if they made the same battery size with Li-ion and how much more "green" their cars could be.

      • E Power makes no sense, why Nissan went down this path is beyond me.They should have gone full Hybrid. You are far better going down the full Hybrid route(Honda or Toyota) they are without a doubt the best Hybrids on the planet. I was interested in the E-Power Qashqai, but after doing a lot of research decided against it.Really like the Qashqai, having had a couple in the family & no issues whatsoever with them.

  • +1

What’s going on with Toyota? Imagine how many sales they’re losing to Tesla, BYD and MG.

    • Its their game to lose.Maybe they have forgotten how to make cars….
Toyota could make a million extra Rav4 hybrids and it would be all sold immediately.

    • +1

Toyota's arrogance will be their demise. They are already waaaay behind the 8ball with regards to EV's and are now begging BYD for help making EV's.

While the bogan element in Australia will always be there wanting their Prado/Hilux/LandCruisers, their numbers will not be enough to sustain the current rate of sales that Toyota are enjoying. Chinese EV's are going to start eating Toyota alive as more and more people want a cheap EV option.

If Toyota dont get on the EV uptake soon, they can basically kiss goodbye to the RAV, Corolla, Yaris and Camry lines, especially with their bullshit drip feeding to stimulate demand strategy. I know plenty of people who were waiting for a Corolla or RAV and just went "(fropanity) it!" and went and bought Outlanders and Teslas.

      • +1

@pegaxs, that is why Toyota has ‘pulled’ their finger out & is going to bring EV’s to the market in the next couple of years. They have litterly dropped Hydrogen as an alternative fuel atm. Never ever discount Toyota, very smart company.

  • Which website is good to buy a new car so that I dont have to deal with the dealerships…

I would still try and go into a dealership. The dealership might not negotiate on price, but they might be able to throw in floor mats or something to sweeten the deal a little. Things like floor mats cost them nothing, but can easily be $100+ if you have to get it yourself. If you don't ask, you don't get.

    • just want a dealership that can guarantee me something not just BS

      • +2

What sort of guarantee are you after? Even the dealerships don't have control over the stock that's coming in. Incoming stock is assigned to certain dealerships based on certain factors (I won't pretend to know what those particular factors are, but maybe someone else does….).

        • Maybe a large dealership that deals with large stocks ? Phil XXX doesnt seem to be the answer.

          • @livingroompc: You are living in fantasy land.

          • @livingroompc: I'd say that Mr Gilbert is one of the bigger dealers… so if they don't know, I'm not sure who else might.

        • You are correct and it's got nothing to do with order volumes.

We ordered via a country dealership and received ours quicker than metros. That was a Hybrid Cruiser AWD but also before the books were effectively closed.

I know my dealer has at least 200+ orders sitting on his desk (RAV, Landcruiser, Hilux etc) and they're still lucky to be averaging 3 vehicles per ship.

Trying to figure out the machinations that drive TA lotto will send you mad.

      • Toyota doesn't have a queue for their orders. They just give what they have to businesses and hire car companies, then give the scraps to customers. You want a garuntee buy literally any other brand.

        • -1

          Absolute garbage.

          • @Hackney: Yes, it's a garbage policy, but unfortunately Toyota is able to do it because they are so popular.

            • @bomberswarm2: They have massive queues fit their vehicles(fact). They have been overwhelmed by orders.Honda is the same with their Hybrid range, nearly a year wait atm.

  • I'm kind of in the same boat as you. I have a 2WD GX Hybrid that I picked up as a demo late last year but now regret not buying the 4x4 version instead, even though it's still an amazing car. So I actually went on the waitlist again for a 4x4 version and I'm going to hopefully time it to sell my current 2WD 2-3 months out of delivery of the new one, I've even put a special condition clause in the sales contract that when I get notified at 3months that the order is due I can decide whether to rip up the contract or continue with it. The dealership did tell me that if you order a Hybrid in either the GX or GXL you'll get the car much quicker (around 12-15 months) than the order of the Cruiser or Edge (24 months +). Also avoid buying white they told me as many of the fleet buyers are getting white obviously which is making your wait times slower, they advised Black, Silver or Blue. But again this is advice from one particular dealership and could change depending on who you go with.

    • I am curious on why you are so desperate for an AWD?

Are you living somewhere that makes it very difficult for cars to drive on?

For the record I have a Rav4 2WD Cruiser Hybrid.

I decided to keep the additional $3000 required for AWD to replace the hybrid battery 10 years down the line.

      • I figured with the two hybrid batteries at either end (rather than just the front) it would have a bit more get up and go?

        • I think thats the wrong use case for wanting a AWD.
The difference will not be that much.
Also its an on demand AWD.
It only come on in certain situations and not all the time.
What you want is a much more powerful car.
I think you should forget about hybrids and get a powerful car with a turbocharged engine.

        • It only has one hybrid battery. It does have an extra electric motor at the rear end and 2 in the front.
Here's an interesting breakdown if anyone is interested.

Here's one on the rear axle.

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KuR0cihFAvQ

          • @EightImmortals: Yes you are correct on that sorry, it was the extra electric motor I was meaning.

      • just for future towing if needed.

        • +2

What would you be towing out of curiosity?

          Maybe this?

  • -1

I will sell you mine for $65k

  • Or Haval H6 hybrid and have one practically tomorrow?
    7 year warranty as well

    • -2

      cant trust them Chinese cars

      • +3

Same was said about Korean cars, now look where they are ;)

        • But they're probably not there yet! 😋

  • Ive said this before - if you dont want to wait, go country, be willing to accept any colour, trim or 2WD option.

NSW is a big state with TA dealers all over the place. Pick up the phone, call, buy, catch a bus or fly and drive back.

In relation to the question of deposits - TA contracts clearly stipulate that dates are not set until your vehicle is rolling down the production line and you're provided with a number. This should have been explained at the time of signing.

  • Hi OP, you can also use a car buying service. The one I am familiar with is OnlineAuto - https://www.onlineauto.com.au/

They maybe able to help you source a car or give you an idea of what's available and waiting times from their dealership connections.
