Help Me Report Dishonourable Roofer / Asbestos Remover

We are a couple who bought first house earlier this month in south east Queensland area.

The house needed quite a few repairs and we found a sign on the street who repairs roofs so we hired a roofer first to seal and paint the roof so we paid $4000 for this job. By the next day of the completion of the work there was a heavy rain causing the ceiling wet and leaking a few spots on the roof. I claimed the warranty of the job and now he said we don’t have the sarking that’s why the roof is leaking a few spots. He should have mentioned that we need sarking or at least he should have take a look if they are not missing any spot to seal!

So I thought that’s fair because we had a lot of work to do by ourselves and we moved on to the next project which was the removal of the asbestos, and he knows that we we’re going to remove them. He said he would arrange the removal of asbestos at a good price as good will, so he offered me the “his asbestos specialist” would take care of the job on 13th April 2023 and remove all on the day for 2 bathrooms and hallways.

Now he claims the deposit of the work $2000 out of $3900 so I asked him that if they are the asbestos specialist and will they give me the clearance certificate afterwards he said yes and I believed. I told him I still need to know their company or contact person which he can’t disclose it because he has been saved those contacts for years (which I don’t understand) but he would provide me the company name on the day of the job.

Now he got the deposit. Surprise surprise he delays the job from Thursday to Saturday. And again I understood because things happen! On Saturday someone with a big truck showed up with him. He looks familiar looked like the other roofer he was working for him and did the job on my roof but he was all covered all with this mask and protective clothing.

Now the roofer says he need the full payment because the specialist required beforehand the job! We got the lower price than market price so they needed it before they start the job. I asked him the invoice of the job he said he will send it to me once I pay him and I told him to send me the invoice with their company name! Now he claims the specialist doesn’t want to do the job because we don’t pay in full price! I was fool that I paid him in full price beforehand of the completion of the removal.

We were outside of the property and waiting for the job completion. Now they said finish the job and he claims all done! So we went the property and now we see all the debris of asbestos all over the places! Nothing has been cleaned or vacuumed. The most frustrated thing was they didn’t remove walls inside of the both bathrooms or the floor which was the main thing! They only removed the walls in the hallway and spread all the asbestos particles everywhere in my house even in the temporary vinyl wall! Now my stuff got covered all with asbestos.

I was furious and I called him now he said it’s Saturday leave him alone! He claims that they will come back on Monday to finish the work. I gave him one more chance to do the work. On 17th Monday, he delays the job and never showed up and he wants me to hire another company and he will pay for the job. Now today I have an invoice from other company and now he took off.

Now I looked like a fool and silly.

I have got his invoice when he was doing the roof job. So I only know his company’s ABN, phone numbers, car rego and bank details. I want to claim him for a full refund and all unexpected cost because of him. Please help me to report this guy. I am willing to share information so no one could be another victim (beware of green signage roofer). I am located at Upper Mount Gravatt 4122.

    Yep.

Sorry this happened, but it would be impossible to protect consumers in a situation like this.
You can't legislate against silly decisions.

Keep all records. Take all photos. File small court claims.

    • Yes we are preparing for Qcat

      • +1

        Is that an OMCG?

        • I am too sure if this is relevant to OMCG but Now I know I will do some research! Thanks

  • +3

i would've done my research find a reputable and lots of reviews on the internet and not call someone that is doing sign advertisements on the street.

    • I know I was stupid and I thought that would save some $ but now I see that is not at all!

Take a lot of photos on the condition and contact these guys about the asbestos removal. Mishandling asbestos is a big no no.

    https://www.qbcc.qld.gov.au/resources/guide/asbestos-safety

Best of luck with QCAT. The trouble is even if you get an order against this guy you might not get any money.

This is awful but you will get over this and learn for next time.

Me, I would go around to everyone of these guys sign and put big warning messages all over them.

Scammer stickers will stand out nicely. People are saying 'tradie' but this isn't a tradie, it's scaming someone out of their money.

    • Sure! Thanks

You look like a fool and silly.

    • Don’t see how this adds to the conversation at this time.

His just trying to be helpful

      • I'm just trying to be helpful

        • That is not being helpful.

  • So Toowoomba then?

  • +2

Well I'm shocked that someone who sticks up signs on random power poles is not a reputable tradesman.

    • Be aware of any sign without company name on signage!

    • I should put up a photo of a brilliant job advertised the same way $40 ph with a mobile number .

  • +1

Yeah, I’d stay away from people who advertise with random signs on power poles. Seems to be more common for roofers and the occasional plasterer.

I’ve had some good and not so good experiences with tradies. We’ve decided from now on we’ll only work with tradespeople who have been recommended… it’s a strategy which has worked well so far.

FYI, if you need an asbestos removal company, I could recommend you one… they did some work on the Gold Coast for me and I imagine they would travel up to my Gravatt. Direct message me if you want more details.

    • Thanks a lot for the recommendation! We hired another company yesterday and they are currently working on it now

Be aware of any sign without company name on signage

  • dude is a crook, and sorry you got scammed, not end of the world though so don't let it kill you inside.

a roof isn't meant to leak, sarking or not.

sarking is a secondary barrier "incase" a roof leaks, water gets pushed under doe ferocious rain and wind, and for fire embers getting under tiles, along with thermal improvements.

in qld you prob find all jobs are < $3600 as this is the trigger amount for compulsory qbcc insurance (I believe).

    • Yea I will also claim for the roof as well! This was a mistake from the beginning with him

    chatgpt summary:

The couple purchased their first house in the South East Queensland area and hired a roofer to seal and paint the roof. However, after heavy rain, the roof began leaking, and they found out that the roofer didn't seal the roof properly as there was missing sarking. The roofer offered to arrange the removal of asbestos at a good price and claimed a deposit of $2000 out of $3900. On the day of the job, someone showed up with the roofer and claimed the full payment before starting the work. The couple paid the full amount in advance but found out that the removal was incomplete, and there was asbestos debris all over the place. The roofer promised to come back and finish the work but never showed up. The couple has an invoice from the roofer for the roof job but only knows his company's ABN, phone numbers, car rego, and bank details. They want to claim a full refund and all unexpected costs because of the roofer's negligence.

  • So I only know his company’s ABN, phone numbers, car rego and bank details

Look up the ABN number on the ATO website. Interested to see if its genuine or fake or expired. Given your story I'm thinking hes just made up stuff. If he has, and if he refused to give you a receipt for the roof you can report him to ATO - you have real car rego and bank details.

Also google his company name and put the word "reviews" at the end to see if anyone else has posted about him.
