Samsung Galaxy S9 Screen Replacement Done by Me

Story: Samsung S9 DUOS mobile phone not a PLUS model, so smaller but dual SIM. I liked this mobile, a Samsung, the size, dual SIM but I couldn't find a suitable (for me) gel case for protection from damage.

Well, I dropped the phone from shirt top pocket height, long story, too long. Phone landed bottom L corner. Result = broken screen and back case. Phone still turned on and off, Touch Screen worked but unreliable due to spreading cracks from corner.

With technical skills and a google search, replacing the screen looked possible, so I ordered a genuine complete screen replacement kit.

And guys… err… and gals. I did it. It wasn't hard. I just worked slowly and carefully with appropriate tools and everything is good. I didn't replace the glue(?) holding it all together, a few carefully placed dabs of contact cement worked OK.

Morel of the story: you can do it. Google for clues, don't get non-genuine junk.

[EDIT] Edit still works OK after replies added. - I mast do spell cheques before pos
ting. [/EDIT]

      There's an edit button…

      • as soon as someone replies isn't that edit button disabled? which normally takes less than 2 poofteenths of a second.

Looks like the lesson didn't hold…

      • it held vert well thank you. :-)

Congratulations. How much was the replacement screen?

    • Thank you. Full digitiser screen glass etc and body surround and replacement back case was just under AU$140.

Fairly cheap to recover a phone that I did like. Hopefully now with a gell case and protection screen it should do me until 3G is no longer a valid service out here in the bush.

        But it's a 4G phone as well?

        • Yes, it is. I am on the fringe of the nearest tower and the connection currently does (I'm assuming) float between 3G & 4G, whichever is stronger at any given time.

Unless things get improved for ALDImobile (Telstra wholesale) I'll only have 4G. Mind you, the S9 is a 5 year old model (modal? :-:) ) now. It was an old phone 3 years ago.

I bought an iFixit kit as my husband kept getting his phone water damaged, but i found my old Xiaomi pad 2 and changed the battery and its working again. unfortunately stripped the screw so i cant make one more change and its taking forever to charge but was pretty stoked. Good enough to run Youtube Kids for a few hours at least - gives me a bit of quiet time and sanity lol

    • Good girl :-)

While I was doing my S9 repair I bought a new genuine battery from an Aus supplier for $30

While I had it apart, to save doing it later. And I now have a spare battery for my small scale solar projects.

Thanks, I was kinda proud of myself for doing it but no one in my family seemed to care 😂

I bought my battery from Aliexpress for about $20. Pretty cheap. Now thinking if I should try to replace my s10+ screen which has a lil crack

        • Do it. It's not difficult with careful hands and good lighting for vision.

  • a few carefully placed dabs of contact cement worked OK

I assumed you tested first before this last step. Just like doing 1 test run after installing dishwasher before pushing it into its spot under the bench?

    • Tested first? Of course. As a matter of fact 2 weeks into the testing stage it looks to be a viable option. :-)

Carefully dabbed into where the old glue(?) had been removed during disassembly. Small dollops placed by a toothpick, the most technical tool that I had at hand.

  • Good job. For your repair did you do the transplant method (buy the oled + frame attached, then transplant all the parts over)?
Going to do my S9+ screen soon. A bit nervous. Last time I did anything like this was an iphone 5 which was dead simple.

    • Thank you. Yes, OLED and frame all assembled and ready to go.

Carefully opened the back with a short tool or two, don't penetrate too far. No heat used, a youtube video for clues. A dozen or so screws, some concealed, all the same size. Antenna, battery etc stuck down and carefully removed, fingerprint detector, a few connectors.

You are experienced, do it. I got the screen bits from aliexpress, even included some tools that weren't mentioned, bonus. pm for details if you wish. I am very happy all round.

By the way, get a replacement back as well. Cheap enough and that way, if you crack it while getting it apart….

Wow almost 24hrs and not one reply from the Op. Maybe the new screen has failed because of a dodgy repair job.

I know him. He drinks too much and has a really short memory. He prolly forgot he posted it and might get it in his ozbargain email about midday.

Look for replies shortly after then.

Nah to WatchNerd . A good job and well done. The contact cement test is still holding on too. I'll re-glue it if it (ever) needs it.

Until then, it's goodnight from him…
