    A keyboard without keys 🤨

    • +1

Nothing new, not completely uncommon to see barebone kits.

    • +4

The existence of such a keyboard means that keys without a keyboard must exist 🤔

      • +2

Of course! You can buy the keys, mechanism, and the board all seperately. Very expensive rabbit hole to fall down though.

        • +1

so far ive spent under $300 on the kit + polycarbonate backplate to replace the alu one
+ $200+ for switches and keys

then another $120 to replace the top frame to the proper white color since the stock white is actually silver

so its like $500-$600 before further customisations when you go down the rabbithole of changing switches and keycaps lol

i just backed an aussie kickstarter Flux for $570aud
which is insane but when you compare it to the price creep of barebones its about equivalent for custom mechanical keyboards and doesnt have the full LED panel

(link if anyones curious about FLUX) - campaign is over so this isnt a shill. Just sharing with fellow enthusiasts

          • @furythree: So far I've just bought a keychron v5 and a leopold 650 mbt, as well as some shine through keycaps. I think I'm comfortably under $400. I can feel the quality difference between the leopold and the keychron though…

            • @Ezuku: yeah everyone reccomending the cheaper alu boards like keychron needs to clarify that they are cheap for a reason

theres a minor discernable difference. you get what you pay for in this space and ppl are willing to pay for it lol

What's next, an unpadded mousepad? A topless desktop? A joystick without joy? I hope you good gentlemen will join me in asking, what has this world come to?

      • its come down to freedom to customise

    • +1

You guys can check out Keychron. It's does have barebone option for nearly all of the models I believe. This really allows you to choose your own switch and keycap. So don't worry, the world is fine :)

I have this, very sturdy build and doubles as a lethal weapon in-case of a home invasion.

  • +6

Good kit, but there are lots of good/better options compared to when this was released.

    Keychron Q1, Akko MOD007, etc.

    • Complaints were common about the stabs too, don't know if they've updated them or not as well

At this price though it's decent I guess

      • Yes, my stabs were over lubed and were getting stuck for the first month or two.

      • +1

They've updated the stabs to what they call the GSV2. They're significantly better.

I just feel like the return on investment is much higher on a professional mouse… i get it these things last decades so maybe worth it for long term use/ work use.

    • +8

They won't last decades if the buyer decides to wander into the world of r/mk. They'll last exactly 1 buying cycle.

    • This professional mouse to do your work?

    • you dont buy these for return on investment lol
      its purely a vanity purchase

for those who treat their PC setups more than just a workhorse. same reason people want artisan versions of stuff in general

a $10 dell keyboard is a better return on investment

I have this keyboard, Its been alright. I had issues with the rotary encoder on the volume dial and it had to be returned. The new one i got had a completely new rotary encoder so i suspect they have a new part. The only other thing is when on the lowest latency mode (2ms) i sometimes get double key presses which inst ideal, unsure if this is due to my switch choice (glorious pandas) though.

Have been looking at the Monsgeek M1, GMMK Pro, and GMK67 for a first build. Thought I was pretty set on picking up the M1 before I saw this deal.

Seems a fair few keyboard hobbyists on ozb based on responses. Anyone able to give me their thoughts or a steer? Ideally looking for a keyboard to build/mod for office use to swap out my current keychron, but am completely new to the keyboard hobby

    • +1

Log in to reply this, if you are looking for 75%, GMMK Pro is the best in term of build and quality, and re sell later if you want to change to other keyboard. If you dont think of changing keyboard, M1 is good choice as it saves a bit of money for you. The cons for GMMK Pro and M1 is only 1 mode connection (usb-c)

GMK67 is plastic one, the feel is not as good as the aluminum one.

If you looking for 65% keyboard with more than one mode connection and aluminium body, Zoom 65, Cidoo V65 are good one.

      • Thanks! Ideally arrow keys and therefore 67-75 was ideal. I like the aesthetic of the M1 but I think GMMK Pro rated better for sound and build quality?

Bluetooth would have been nice but it's not so necessary.

I've got a Zoom75 on pre-order which will replace my keychron at home

I started getting a lot of chatter with my GMMK Pro, passwords kept failing and I couldn't figure out why. I finally realised what was happening when I looked at what I was typing. I tried different (tactile) switches and confirmed they worked in other keyboards fine, tried changing the timing in Glorious' software which didn't do squat, but flashing QMK mostly worked. I've now changed to linears and it's mostly okay. But having to do all so what I typed was what appeared on the screen that sucked.

Also I've got no capslock indicator using QMK now either other than Windows onscreen popup seeing as how it didn't support the lights. I should probably check if they've updated that in firmware now actually.

I still wish it was a slightly different typing experience, it's gotten almost fine now I've lubed the switches, but I would be interested to see if their upgrade kit made any difference to make it a bit softer. If it was available at the (not) cheap price only available to whatever club thing they've got going on to everyone, I probably would have tried that out. Except I don't want to spend any more money on this thing. I haven't even changed the stabs out because it seemed like so much hassle with all the screws they use (plus I used the ones I bought for this in my work keyboard lol), so am suffering now with all the ticking seeing as how the switches are so nice. But at least they don't stick I guess.

The general build quality/appearance seems good. It's a big chunky and heavy keyboard that looks alright and seems 'premium'. The knob is handy for quickly adjusting the sound when watching videos or listening to audio where nothing is at the same volume over keyboard shortcuts or reaching for my speaker/amp volume knob. General RGB doesn't mean anything to me though, so can't comment on it's effectiveness (or lack thereof now ha). But at this point, it's just fancy packaging really.

I'm not sure I'd recommend one to be honest. If they've fixed the chatter issue with revisions and if they include the 'upgrade kit' as standard now (also not sure if they do?), then maybe. But at this point I'd probably be looking to try something different.

If only Mode Sonnets weren't so expensive. :(
