Kindle 4 Wi-Fi Vs Kindle Touch Vs Kindle Keyboard?

So I managed to pick a kindle wifi up for $83.40, after hunting around for a $60 one given the ozbargain post on $60 qld/eastern states kindle wifis.

Unfortunate I couldn't find a $60 one, but the $83.40 was the last one left. Basically other stores have left kindle keyboards that are (i think wifi version) $127, and kindle touches for $110. BAsically wondering for those prices which kindle would be best to go with, given I haven't kept up with pricing or features.. how good a bargain or value would each represent?

I was thinking the kindle wifi is cheap if I can find another for $83.40 (how much is it usually in aus, for your average discount/price - not major clearance prices)? But otherwise there surely must be a reason the touch is more exp at $110?

Am not sure how much a kindle touch usually goes for… but dick smith has them for $180 was it? or $210?? for 3g and wifi version. Then again the kindle wifi there is $135+ :O

  • I think it depends on what you use it for. I personally went Kindle 4 wifi because I had no interest in touch (for page turns I prefer the side buttons, not to mention no fingerprints on the screen) and it was cheaper. The bigger battery would have been nice, but it still lasts ages so this isn't too much of a concern to me.

If you use it for any form of typing (e.g. notes) or if you like to click on words etc. then you'd probably want the keyboard or touch one instead.

  • +1

The battery is a moot point, as I read mine about 3 hours every day, and it only needs charging once a fortnight; probably longer when I think about it.

The side buttons are a god send, and I so rarely type anything/select anything on the screen that the lack of touch or a keyboard are both non-issues.

Consequently the Kindle 4 Wi-Fi offers a thinner, lighter, cheaper kindle with drawbacks that don't affect me at all.

And as a final note I want to repeat that the side buttons are a godsend for comfortable reading; I can't emphasise their importance to me enough.

  • As others have noted, you won't miss touch if you don't do annotations or anything that requires input. It was a bit tedious to set up Wifi passwords on the K4, but it was only the once. I like that it's slimmer and lighter than the keyboard models. They also reduced the memory, but you're not likely to hit the limit. You can always unload books and reload later from the cloud. Battery life is not an issue. You got it for a good price, think I paid $99 the last time it was on offer.

  • I have a kindle keyboard and I just bought one of the $60 wifi 4s the other day.

Personally don't like the touch for all the reasons people have listed above but if you do need to type a keyboard or touch is the only choice (painful on a 4).

That being said the buttons are better placed on the keyboard to my mind but the smaller size of the 4 is great to keep in a jacket pocket.

The 2GB memory of the 4 is more than enough but the shorter battery life is a downside but I haven't really used it enough to notice the recharging yet.

In summary I'd go with the 4, does everything you want, smaller, lighter, cheaper…
