Great price for a great camera.

  • My g7 is broken :( I wish I had the dollars for this

  • Love this camera, a steal at this price!

  • +2

Almost wanted to buy it a few years ago, then balked at the weight (nearly 700g) and size which made me wonder why would I go MFT.

    • +1

The body is heavy but it is the lenses that are small and light as compared to the full frame. In comparison, Sony's Full-frame body is very light but its lenses are heavy as brick. Its just how the design is, the lens has to cover a full-frame sensor so they can't shrink the lens further plus other features. Here MFT Lens beats in terms of weight. G9 has excellent IBS which doubles with the lens making it even better.

      • +1

I am not against MFT, even for MFT G9 has a pretty heavy body. my EM1 Mkii which I bought here at a great price is over 100g lighter and easily rivals G9 in nearly all aspects apart from video.

    • Haha, this is the lightest of the 4k@60p IBIS enabled MFT bodies ;)

The current issue with people with limited budget going into mirrorless or DSLR is the cost of lenses. They've gone up a lot since Covid. I got a kit lens for $70 brand new pre-Covid, but now, to get even that cheapo kit lens is double that price.

This camera body was on special for $899 back in 2021. Ideally, the price should be lower now as Panasonic released more cameras since then.

    • Agree, price for a new set post covid is going at least 2k for M43, more like 3-4K for Sony. Then you have to spend time post…..

  • I was looking at this when JB has the 15% off and they are giving away the battery grip as well.

Yet Me and my wife try very hard to justify spending the money every time a camera deal comes up A7iii, A7C and G9. We always come to the conclusion spending that money for such low utilization is not worth it. Whether its 1.5K for full frame or sub 1K for M43, Phones are just too good and too convenient in 2023.

When you look back at your phone photos in 10 years time you're going to wish you had purchased a proper camera

I have used all and had all of them simultaneously so I could compare. A full-frame (Canon 5D Mark III), crop sensor(Fujifilm XT1, XT3), MFT (Lumix G9) and iPhone 13 Pro. iPhone pictures are good but once you see them on the computer screen you can easily tell which one was taken from the camera and which one with iPhone. 5D produced excellent pictures on par with Fujifilm. But G9 pictures are as comparable, if not better, to 5D. In terms of sharpness, nothing could beat G9 due to its excellent IBS. I've sold 5D, and XT3. Kept G9 due to the smaller size of the lenses and overall lighter package. XT1 due to its retro looks and the types of pictures it produces (colour profile etc). XT1+23mm prime lens bundle is the lightest I use. You can compare the output of different cameras I used here on Instagram

      • Good post, thank you!

I was thinking exactly the same, even the best phone camera's just don't even compare to my old D60 from a decade ago, let alone newer cameras.

With that said, have you used the Canon RP? What are your thoughts? Am considering an upgrade sometime this year.

The question for most people is not about which camera has the best IQ, is more about how often you can take it with you. If you all you do is viewing on monitor and/or posting on FB/IG, then a mobile is more than sufficient plus the convenience it is often the better choice.

          • @OzHan: If it's portable, then you won't be looking at any form of separate camera, and as such won't be looking at this deal. I was just saying my preference, and wasn't meaning to have a go at other people preferences.

            • @teereb: I won't buy it for sure, regardless of the price. Em1 Mkii is likely my last mirrorless. Still need it for 1% of the time, eg: on special occasions where portability/size is not an issue, or when I need to shoot kids sports where I can benefit from the 18fps.

I have not used newer Canon bodies. But with Canon and probably Nikon, you are stuck with their own lenses. Sony, on the other hand, has a ton of OEM and third-party options. I have not used Sony, either. Nowadays, almost all cameras take excellent pictures, and most of their colour profiles can be adjusted in post-processing. I am a travel photographer, mostly landscape, so weight is a big factor. As I stated earlier, MFT bodies can be bulky (mainly because of many features crammed in, plus excellent IBS), but their lenses are still compact and light. So it comes down to the feature set which matters to you and if lens options are also a priority.

          • @lastkey: Thanks for the reply, that's a good comparison.

A bit to think about for now, cheers.

          • @lastkey: Damn they're all good

      • re: iphone 13pro vs cameras - was recently using a Lumix LF1 (remember that? neat and tiny …) after 'losing' a GooglePixel 7 for a week (misplaced and later returned), and found the decade-older LF1 still produced comparable to slightly better looking shots, with better 'realism' to the Pixel7, despite the latter's great computational photography. But the LF1 needed a bit of basic aperture/shutter/ISO balancing to get the best out of it, unlike the automatic Pixel7… so maybe convenience is key here?

  • Unless you are already in M43, not a good idea to jump into it.

But if you can find used gears and get a good deal, M43 is still pretty good.

The G9 is a great camera which I bought, but ultimately sold because for me, MFT is about being lightweight, small, and portable - of which this camera is none of those things. It is a great camera - but it is huge and bulky.

    • +1

true, small and portable like the (classic) GM5 or GX series … but isn't the G9 like the GH series really about making videos? and so they're quite compact when compared to the 4k alternatives?

      • +1

the G9 was the photography-focused cameras over the GH-series.

  • -1

    Only worth $700 max.

  • +1

Wooooow that's a great price. I love my G9, incredible camera.

    • +1

Hehe, I own a media company, and have now bought 7 of these since release when they drop below $1000!

Great for dropping from helicopters, buildings and boats (accidentally of course!) :P

Even with access to A7Siiis, R6IIs, GH6s, S5IIs, this camera still does 70+% of the work…

  • I currently have a G85, takes good photos for socials. If I got out more to shoot and had the available funds I would jump onto this and sell the G85. Would love to get the S1 one day.

  • Incredible camera, good price for new. Can pick them up 2nd hand cheaply too

  • Does this camera has 30 min video limit? I am looking for a camera for a video podcast. Can anyone recommend me some camera with the 30min limit

    • Recording limits depends on resolution and framerate:
      AVCHD Formats - 30 minutes
      MP4 [FHD] - 30 minutes
      MP4 [4K/100M/30p or 4K/100M/24p] - 30 minutes
      MP4 [4K/150M/60p] - 10 minutes

(or 4k@50/60p is capped at 10mins, everything else is 30mins)

For a camera without recording limits, look at the G95 as bare minimum (but won't get 4k@60p if that's important) :/

  • Best Camera I ever tested…

even better vs Aps-c or FF

  • Worth upgrading from gx85? Not buying for video.

    • +1

Completely different form factor to the GX85 (and a lot bigger than that body)!

G9 has a better 20MP sensor, 6k photo mode (where you can chose the actual photo from 30 frames of 6k video that can be from before you press the shutter button - useful for birds / kids doing unexpected things), a tripod "hi-res" mode that produces 80MP images and works well, weather sealed (for rainy days), better autofocus, bluetooth connectivity to phone, better IBIS and webcam function ;)

If none of that affects you, or the form factor is too big, then the GX85 is perfectly capable! Although the G9 slays in video ;)

Haha, just found an article that does it better than my comparison: https://www.apotelyt.com/compare-camera/panasonic-g9-vs-pana…
And people that have had both discuss: https://www.reddit.com/r/M43/comments/spr9ow/gx85_vs_g9/

      • Thanks so much. I use a 5d mkiii when weight and size isnt a factor and my tendonitis isnt biting as hard. But when weight and size do matter, gx85 is what helps me.
All the additional features is realy good to have. Better autofocus and ibis sounds so tempting at this price.
