Cat Pet Insurance - Dental

Hi guys,

Have a Tonkinese cat - 8.5 years old, he's a rescue. We're looking at getting pet insurance for him, but, would like dental covered as well.

What's your best recommendations?

Thanks in advance

A lot of pet insurance places only allow you to insure your cat if you started before 7 years old. You might be best just saving up for the procedure because pet insurance costs has gone through the roof.

Best of luck for you and your kitty. Dental health is important. We got some little cat toothbrushes, and cat toothpaste, and try to brush our cat’s teeth reasonably regularly. It takes two people. You can also look at some dental dry food and chicken necks.

  • I'm with Medibank and dental is covered- but I joined when my two younger cats were 5 months old so might only be covered because they were kittens- they are 14 months old now. they (and my 16 year old cat with no insurance) also have Healthy Pets Plus, which gives a discount on dental.

No dental issues so far except a teeny bit of gingivitis on the 16 year old (but she's also a grump, so vets is fine with leaving it). Feeding dry regularly helps.

We had way too many cats scavenging our house for free food.
Must say the dogs become lazy and no longer care.
The best looking cat that took up residence under the house next door got shredded by younger competing cats. Not sure if that can be insured?

  • As stated, you might struggle getting insurance for your cat. Is the cat currently in good health? It might be worth taking him to a vet for a consult to get an overall checkup and to discuss with them about your options for budget concious healthcare for your cat. With most procedures and even consults, pricing will vary between clinics and dental work is no different. I know that one of the local clinics in my area offer a half price dental month every year. So it might be worth calling around and seeing what different clinics will do to secure you as a customer.

    • Cats in good health - bought knose health with dental, it's worth buying imo

  • Pet dental insurance is very expensive and in my view not very good value for money. Whatever plan you are looking at, compare total costs over 3-5 years. You might find just paying up front is more cost effective.

    • The plan I bought was $97 vs $70 something without dental. From what I've heard any dental is $700min. Just a headache I didn't need tbh, and I can't really question vets..

      • Are there any exclusions? Is there any gap or claim limits (lifetime or yearly)?

Just like private health insurance for humans, these factors make a big difference in value for money.

  • worth having cat dental insurance. my tabby needed braces and insurance saved me big $$$$$
