Transfering AmEx Points

Hey

I am looking for some advice.

I am closing my AMEX account, I have 240k points.

It's basically the same value to send to Krisflyer or Velocity…however Krisflyer is valued 1.5c PP.

If i transfer to Krisflyer, what's the conversion from Krisflyer to Velocity?(If I change my mind)

It's hard to build up Krisflyer these days, so in terms of resale Krisflyer is better.

Thanks

what's the conversion from Krisflyer to Velocity?

First result in Google - 1.55:1 each way.

    • Yeah, so I lose value.

      It's a difficult choice.

I either send 110k to Krisflyer, or to Velocity.

      Just worried about future bookings.

Just remember, KrisFlyer miles have a hard expiry of 3 years.

You can't sell or transfer Krisflyer miles.

    • Sorry I meant can't transfer them to another Krisflyer member.

I thought you can transfer your krisflyer to your velocity account?

    • yes you can

  • Which Amex card? I have the Amex Explorer with 300,000+ points. Rather than cancel it before the next annual fee is due, I'm planning to downgrade it to the Amex Essential (with no annual fee) and hold the points in the Amex environment until I need them elsewhere. Perhaps that could work for you too.

    • This is exactly what I did, now this is the problem that is occurred… I just applied for a Commonwealth credit card with Qantas bonus points and on my credit check it says I have 2 American express cards open.

American express can't send me a closure letter because they say they just downgraded my card yet it is showing that I have two American express credit cards on my credit check.

So my only option is to close down my American express today, they'll send me a closure letter and hopefully shuts down both cards.

Otherwise my bank said you have to ring some credit company and file for an error and they look into it and they can fix it but that can take up to 30 days.(even tho quicker normally)

So basically I have 30 days to decide whether to transfer my points to Velocity or to krisflyer as my only option at the moment if I want to get this new card approved ASAP before I go away in 3 weeks is the cancel my American express today.

      I can't even upload a final statement, because I don't have one.

So it leaves me little options, because otherwise Commbank looks at as an undisclosed liability.

    • I'm planning to downgrade it to the Amex Essential (with no annual fee) and hold the points in the Amex environment until I need them elsewhere.

Oh cool didn't know you can do that! Though it would still be affecting your chance for a new sign-up offer I guess, to get more points

Yes, but in my case I'm done with churning cards and collecting points.

    • Btw, when they downgraded me it must of hit my credit again.

Because Commbank showed my current AMEX card, and the old one is still showing on my credit report because the idiots at AMEX never closed it. They argued with me for hours they cant close it, same account but on my credit report it's showing as a different card!

  • Krisflyer definitely.
From what I see, points required is the same for peak and off peak season, whereas Velocity can be more than double. 3 years expiry is quite a long time. Surely you would fly within the next 3 years.

    • Yeah, but 110k points doesn't even get you return to Singapore business.
      You need 140k

I also learnt next time with American express you're better off going with a Qantas card because it transfers 1 for 1 the bonus is 160000 points you get 160000 Qantas points whereas with velocity and krisflyer it's only 1 for 2 American express points

I'm not sure what credit card bonus points I'm going to get to earn future krisflyer points

I have 135000 at the end of this year expiring and I'm already flying business class next month. So I'm not even sure how I'm going to use those points, I'm probably going to have to sell them(book for someone else) because I lose value transferring them back to Velocity which is mind blowing lol

I spose still more value at 1.5c sell, than velocity 1c. So better off with Krisflyer it seems.

    • Thanks to the Covid pandemic, even after KF kicked the can down the road a few times, my KF points start expiring in August (and my wife's in October). With our personal circumstances being as they are, I don't foresee us doing any overseas travel for at least another 2.5 years, so I guess I'll just be transferring them to Velocity and taking the hit. :(

  • Why don't you transfer them to Asia Miles and use the points for qantas bookings. Asia miles don't expire now

    • But I cant combine Asia miles and Qantas miles?

      I'd never build them up

It's easy to build up Qantas

Everything else is more difficult now

At least Krisflyer I can sell via booking at 1.5c, that's 2k

Better than velocity it seems, tho I got 110k pts sitting there.

  • If you really want the qantas points then you can transfer to marriott and then convert to Qantas. However you'll take a hefty haircut even with the marriott 60k bonus

    • Yeah, no good option

I'll just do Krisflyer, it's nearly enough for a 1 way business trip to Europe and I got 3 years.

  • I’ve got about 750k Amex points, not sure what to do with them… been toying with swapping them, but at a bit of a loss what to do tbh.

    • The best bet is to simply book a flight for someone else, you can sell them that way

      Or

      Use them :)

What did you end up doing? Amex devaluing points transfer to Krisflyer soon.

      • I ended up moving them to Krisflyer, I figured they're worth more if I end up booking a flight for someone else.

They will last 3 years anyways, I think it's enough or close too return to Singapore business from Australia.

Nice. If only krisflyer points didn’t have an expiry.

@Happyd: Yeah, it's hard to build up and I stopped traveling for a while.

I am building too, so I cant afford holidays like I use too! I just used a bunch of points Business return, and Europe was so expensive so I may have to stick to Asia for a while LOL.

I will either sell the current 140k expiring by Dec 23, and hold onto the new batch to see if I fly anywhere! I also have 100k VFF, 400k QFF but at least they don't expire.

However, the way things are going…taxes higher I am sure at one point theyll have less value.

  • The around the world option was devalued, it cost me 280k instead of 240k points but the value is undeniable.

I'm at the tail-end of six week trip, I flew business syd-hnd/nrt-mex-pty-cnf/gru-ist-xJED-bkk-mel. Paid $1500 in taxes and surcharges.

Reason I'm hee is researching where to put my amex points. Gonna put on KF again, with my platinum bonus I'm nearly halfway to another a RTW next year.

    • Good value around the world, but honestly J am not impressed with Business class flying as a whole.

It's nice, but it's not worth the money if you had to pay.

I think flying F would be sweet, but hats to find RTW that way I assume haha.
