TxtNet Browser: Browse the Web over SMS

TxtNet Browser is an Android app that enables users to browse the web without a mobile data connection by using SMS to transmit HTTP requests. The app compresses and encodes pre-parsed HTML responses using Google's Brotli compression algorithm and a custom Base-114 encoding format. Users can act as servers by using their phone's primary number and a Wi-Fi/data connection, allowing for distributed, peer-to-peer networks.

The app is compatible with Android 4.4-13+ and is available as an APK download, with a Google Play release coming soon. However, all web traffic should be considered unencrypted, as requests are made over SMS and received in plaintext by the server.

It requires two unlimited sms plans:

1 to be the server (and one have wifi) and the other is the client but doesn't need anything but sms.

Will this be useful to OzBargain? Probably not but I thought it was cool.

  • well basically still need data? (the server)

    • True, honestly given the cost of people's time it's not worth it.

But you can imagine a situation in other countries where there cost of time and data may differ

  • Speaking about sms, long time ago there is a website where we can pay (few cents) to send sms with any sender number we want (from website to mobile)
That web should be illegal now i hope. Cant remember the name.

It's just like setting the From field in an email anyone can.

      • Maybe used by scammers to spoof sms pretending from banks etc.
