Ceramic Coating - Paint Protection - Windows Tinting and Shmick Insurance

Hi All,

I am going to receive delivery of my new vehicle and one of the consultants had called to see if i needed ceramic coating, paint protection, tinting and schmick insurance.

This is my first brand new car and have no clue which options i should be going in for .. Is it ideal to get the paint protection and ceramic coating from the dealer or outside? Is Shmick insurance even worth it for anyone who has recently got it .

This is company which has been recommended by the dealer and below are the prices quoted

https://motorone.com/protektiv-hydro/

$1995- Hydro Paint Coating & Street legal tint.

$2695 – Hydro Complete pack & Street legal tint.

$2995- Hydro Complete pack, Street legal tint & 1 year Schmick.

$1695- Thinkware 2KHD Dual Dash Cam.

$495 – Street legal tint side windows.

PS - I am based in Mebourne so any other recommded places would be great !

Whatever the price,.half it and that's about what you'll pay sourcing it yourself outside the dealer.

We had it on wife's car due to getting ripped on a cancelled order vehicle which usually had a 12 mth wait..slightly easier to clean but it's not worth $2k

You could source it easily outside dealer for under $1k if you think a ceramic coating is worth it (easier to clean, perhaps shinier pant finish…but it's not doing anything magical to prevent dints or scratches)

Dash cam, viofo for under $200 bucks would do me and pocket $1500.

I have a new car coming soon and it's unlikely to get a ceramic coating, most likely just 6 month treatment with diy options from the multitude of "ceramic" spray on coatings as part of regular washing.

Put simply - no to all. Very high prices.
If you feel you need these, get some prices elsewhere.

I honestly wouldn't bother- I'm also about to get my first brand new car and opted for exactly 0 of those things, except that I bought my own Dashcam. It was a Navman something or other at JB for $130 on sale and a cheapo one from Supercheap on sale. The car has a USB in the mirror so no need for hard wire, but I don't think hardwire costs all that much, and I'm not convinced you need a really full on dashcam for private use really.

I'm also in Melbourne, and tinting to me depends on where and how long your car will be parked really- garage and multidecks, don't bother EXCEPT if you have a sunroof, tint the heck out of the sunroof. If you park on street all the time, might be worth it to do the windows. I've had cars with and without tint and honestly not worth it. Might also be worth it if you drive a lot and there are kids in the back.

Ceramic and paint protection and all that isn't worth it IMHO.

I bought a cheap dust cover (open sided garage and long-term parking), I have cleaners, scratch fluid and polish and an orbital buffer and that's my lot for protecting paint. Didn't get any of the dealer mats, boot liners etc either. Saved a bucket and just went to Supercheap for mats and seat covers and got a boot liner at Coles.

    Shmick insurance

    Is this Stem Lube?

  • Paint protection is scam, but wrap could fix the paint chip or tiny scratchs. Then again nothing can stop a dent.
I have seen so many wrapped cars with dents 😬

I can't believe this question is being asked AGAIN.

As others have said, this is just pure profit for the dealer. Ignore them and source it yourself.

I got all windows and a sunroof (excluding the front window) tinted on a station wagon by a seperate supplier for that price, and got proper 3M material with the heat/UV specs I wanted.

  • Congratulations !

    Do not.
    Just say no…

Welcome to the land of car dealerships, where the game of persuasion is in full swing. Here, dealers make a killing by enticing unsuspecting buyers with tempting words like "99% UV protection ceramic tint" and "Ceramic hydro paint protection," until the buyer is practically hooked. They'll crank up the FOMO until the poor soul finally gives up with a meek "we can't afford it"

I signed a car contract recently and said I won't be getting any add-ons like tinting or paint protection, so don't send over the accessories person.

They still insisted, so I just said no in the most disinterested way to them for 5 mins until they got the hint.

      Was almost enjoyable ;)

      • Congrats on new car.

Tint are must to keep out those pesky UV rays and beat the heat but definitely not dealer.

As for paint protection/ceramic coating, it can help extend the life of your car's paint and keep that shiny, showroom look. With the notorious Aussie sun, every bit of protection help.

However, can get these treatments done for a fraction of the cost that dealers often quote.

That "scmick" dent fix service is fishier than a seafood market.

      • They still insisted…

        Are they still pretty hot?

        • The one was….whatever the politically correct version of the opposite of that is

Beware the Ming Mole! For she is the final boss of an OzBargainer

  • Always push back say you will get done elsewhere and they will drop price, Schmick is good, $50 for a repair of scrapes and bumps good colour matching takes stress out of parking in car parks..

    • My friend paid 2K for this so called scratch repair service and now regret. Would suggest to Read the fine print. He had a scratch that is small but span across 2 panels. They said they won't do it as its on 2 panels, but would do the repairs if the same or longer scratch was only one 1 panel. He asked them to fix only on 1 panel and they refused.

      • only had good experinces with Schmick across 3 vehicles one Audi with Nano Grey decent scrape and they worked half a day great colour matching Have wheel protection too on mine.

    • I was talked into Schmick when new car was purchased 4 years ago. I had several claims rejected as the job was too big (crack in plastic bumper), and one successful one where minor scratches were repaired OK. I had to wait several weeks for the repair man to come and do the job. I am unsure whether I would purchase again.

    • Oh, that's what Schmick is- I have taken that (under another name) via my NVL, 100% do that

  • I had the ‘care pack sale lady’ try to sell me a tint and ceramic pack on a 1yo used car I was purchasing. The car already has tint, but I couldn’t recall at the time of the phone call. May have had paint protection too, but no way of knowing.

My questions are typically: is the paint on your vehicles no good from the factory? Why does it need this extra protectant? Are you trying to sell me a new car with paint that won’t last?

    • Do You want Chips with that?

      • Yea, that’s why I didn’t get the Schmick package.

        • Sometimes the euphoria gets you..
the convenience comes at a cost..

      Hi

I work in the coating industry and the paint on a new car is fantastic, their is zero need for any treatment, the factory applied systems are better than anything you can get after market. The concept of ceramic is simply a silicone or silicone oil that repels water well, and forms a bond to the surface of the clear coat, but so does any decent polish….. Same effect just polish needs replacing more often as it wears off.
You can buy the same off the shelf for a hundred bucks at an autoshop and even then it's overpriced for what's in it

  • Yes it will cost less to do it outside but you get the convenience by buying from dealer.

Also you didn't say what you're getting, but if you're spending >$50K for a car, then maybe you don't mind that little extra.

I have the Schmick package. Not bad. Used them several times. $50 not bad for a quick fix.

  • Audi quoted me $3990 for the exterior& interior ceramic coating and window tinting. I managed to bargain it to $1000. FYI.

The dashcam are most likely about $70, check 70mai. You can install it yourself in half an hour easily.

Their tint is carbon, not ceramic. Carbon is about 30% cheaper from ceramic.
