Bread Maker 2023 Recommendations - Best Value

I would like to engage all bakers for their automatic bread maker opinions -

Essentially, K-mart has a well reviewed breadmaker with 800g capacity at only $79

Costco has the Cuckoo @ $190 shipped (cheaper instore typically) with a 1kg capacity

Does anyone feel strongly for one or the other?
Do you passionately feel that I should spend extra hard earned for the Panasonic with yeast dispenser?

Yes, I would love to make sourdough bread, if possible

As always, thank you!

  • Got the Kmart one recently and it's been good 🙂

  • They are noisy. Don't expect to set it going before you get up for fresh bread. Unless you have somewhere separate from the house to set it up.

      They are noisy.

That's a very sweeping statement. What sample size are you basing that on because I would describe our Panasonic bread maker as very quiet.

      • 2 out of 2 that I have owned. Each would wake me, unless it was on the back porch. Mine were budget to mid-range.

        • Only thing that ever woke us up was the smell of the bread!

  • Back in the day when breadmakers were a thing it was Panasonic first, daylight second. I've owned a few, all still in-service having been passed along. Two distinctive features: 1. cast alloy loaf tin; 2. extensive range of programmes that are lengthy and complex. If you can find another brand that includes these features, go for it. I don't think you need a yeast dispenser.

BTW, sourdough is made by fermenting dough so you'd need a machine with refrigeration. I use my breadmaker to knead my sourdough but there's no way it can produce a loaf.

    • Thank you!
In this day and age, cost and reputation has little bearing on product quality, unfortunately. This is largely why I come to OzB

      • I use pretty much daily the highly regarded SD-2501 and you can find these online (maybe slightly used)

Mate, the Panasonic is still the best by far. Basically all tests have shown this. If you want to save money, feel free to get something inferior.

    • Refrigeration? I just use a jar and an oven.

  • +1

You could buy a stand mixer and just bake the bread in your oven.

  • my dad used to have a bread maker.

he'd only use it for the mixing/rising but would use the big oven to bake the dough into bread.

I'd get one secondhand from facebook marketplace as there are a ton listed there.

    • I'm open to it, but the asking price and inconvenience of pick up is not currently worth the discount.

      • plenty in my neighbourhood for ~$50.

        also gumtree and OP shops.

  • +1

I use a Panasonic bread maker and it makes the best bread-maker bread I have tasted.

If you are looking for value, just grab one for next to nothing from the Op shop

  • +1

Hand mixer and a heavy dutch oven. That's all you need.

  • Is it cost effective to make your own bread?
I was looking at Laucke bread mix prices and it appeared to be cheaper to just by a loaf of bread.
My current favourite is Coles 7 seeds and grains loaf for $2.75.

    • +1

Flour is $2/kg or cheaper, recipe needs less than 500g, so there's $1 or less. Other ingredients are small $ amounts (2 teaspoons yeast, some oil, sugar, salt, water).

It's more that you actually know what's going into the product. Plush fresh warm bread is so good!

      • You failed to mention the ever increasing cost of electricity for those of us who don't have solar.
I pick up my bread from the Coles bakery at 7:00 AM when it is warm from the oven. :)

        • Petrol costs to get to Coles? Unless you have electric / solar.

          • @Anubis: I walk :)

        • I hope you walk there

          • @spackbace: Yes I do :)
