Lexar S60 Jumpdrive 16GB USB 2.0 Flash Drive 3-Pack $10 + Delivery ($0 C&C/ in-Store/ OnePass/ $65 Order) @ Kmart

170

Was looking for a few cheap USB drives and couldn't find any recent bargains on here. Cheapest 16GB at Officeworks is currently $6.40, so these are almost half that, at $3.33 per unit.

Found that Kmart has a 3 pack of 16GB drives for $10:
https://www.kmart.com.au/product/3-pack-lexar-s60-usb-20-16g…

Or a 2 pack of 32GB drives also for $10:

And lastly, a 64GB single drive for $7:

These are USB 2.0 drives - perfect for small file storage / MP3 music/podcasts for in-car use etc.

The multi-drive packs include a teal colour, which some in the political arena may like! :-P

Also, these were stored in a big collection of Lexar boxes at the back of the service desk at the store I went to. They weren't with the other USB drives (Verbatim brand etc.) on the shelf in the electronic section.

Picked up a pack on Monday for $10, very slow drives.

    • +1

They're $10 for 3, what did you expect NVME speeds.

      They're great 'good enough' drives.

I certainly cannot recommend anyone be purchasing USB 2.0 drives in 2023

    • +2

I'll most likely only get them for my Gotek floppy emulator. Don't need fast or large on something like that, in 2023 of course.

I tend to disagree. If it saves a dollar, and here it is saving more like $15, go for it.
If I am handing in an assignment or a document to have printed taking up a few megabytes, why would I care if it is usb2 or 3?
If I am handing somebody 20 photos totalling 100mb, why would I care about slightly slower speed?

Almost none of my use of usb sticks is for filling them up with files - I have external HDDs/SSDs for storing large files.
90% of the time it is for putting a handful of files that are too big to email, or where I need to give a copy via an off line exchange, where it is a good advantage to have a drive so cheap it could be disposable without much care.

      • I mostly agree with you there, but in the use case of 20 photos.

Thinking on you using it for that to go orint photos. A few times you go and do that. Then the photo machine reading all the files is slow as molasses.

The worst case for these is used for video style media, think dvd players in cars. Even with playback at usb2, writing at a faster speed makes for a big convenience.

    • Many 'USB3' drives aren't any faster than the USB2 standard. Like, I wouldn't 'recommend' USB2, but that's not a reason to not get it.

USB2 is 480Mb/s like that's pretty fast, for context that's like half as fast as GB Ethernet. Honestly, so many devices nowadays could still be using USB2, and many are running USB2 speeds just with the USB3 standards.

Can you show me any USB2 drives that are writing at 60MB/s (480Mb/s / 8)

        Zero…..

        • Can you show me USB3 drives (at this price point) that are faster than USB2?

My point is, cheap flash memory is slow. These drives read at about 20 MB/s, write at about 10 MB/s (that's at near 100% full since I had already filled them with ISOs, not sure that it matters). I've got USB3 drives that are similar speeds. And even my expensive USB3 Drives only have write speeds of 25 MB/s (granted read speeds of over 200 MB/s).

          • @Shermanpk: "Show me USB3 drives (at this price point) that are faster than USB2?"

Why would I do that, I never said that.

  • If you are after some for temporary use (like sharing big files), you can check out the cheap ones with very cute shapes and your customized logos in Aliexpress.

  • why are they still selling USB 2.0?

    • +3

Why not? I have heaps of similar drives as disposables because I know they will never get back to me once I leave them with someone.

    • +1

      1) many USB3 drives aren't any faster than USB2, 2) USB2 can eliminate SOME compatibility issues on very old systems, 3) it's cheaper.

Why use USB3 when USB2 will do fine?

  • +2

This isn't really a deal, this is their normal price, I got this exact pack for this exact price like a month ago.

Can confirm they're slow as hell, but fantastic for a 'good enough' drive, I use them as ISO boot drives since most OS's these days require +8 GB. This is a good way to get fairly cheap 'good enough' drives to have a heap of different ISOs. (also IMO USB2 is almost kinda a bonus since I know EVERYTHING has USB2 and USB2 is ALWAYS compatible, when it's not then I've got bigger issues!)

    • +1

Writing to this drive was five times faster than reading from a DVD-R that I had!

Glad you're finding them fantastic for super compatible use as boot drives etc.
