When I was growing up these style of games were all that were around. Pretty much two dimensional board game view.
I don't quite see the attraction now that VR, and high resolution games are available? Is it because it isn't high res 3D modelling or people trying to re-kindle old styles?
Anyway to each their own I suppose.

I find it is just a different kind of game that wouldn't be any better if it was played in 3d. Into the breach is a great example where it is about the game play not the graphics.

Invisible Inc also great 2d platformers

      • Feels bad when 2D games are built on general 3D engines to overheat and drain device battery

Kids love old school VGA graphics. Roblox, minecraft. People play these games to escape. If they wanted fancy graphics that looked like reality, they can walk outside.

      • What a sensory experience

        Oh the aches; the pains

Super high fidelity eyes and haptics

and become the mastermind of humanity

Not saying that "Violations Will Be Punished" is this but I think well drawn 2D graphics can easily compete with low effort design 3D graphics. The technology is there to create beautiful renders but how often are game devs using the full potential?

For me, another big factor is motion sickness. These days it's hard to pin down which games will give me motion sickness (PS1 era was the worst) but games like this, definetly won't give motion sickness. I'm sure I'm a miniority in this regard but I know I'm not the only one.

Pukers unite! I can't play lots of games with friends because of the motion sickness. I think the larger monitors don't help either. Isometric, turn based and top down sims are my go-to because of it

        • Totally.

1st person shooters are the worst in terms of sickness. I would always be taking breaks when the friends and I were playing CS at the LAN cafe. "Come on guys, isn't it time for C&C yet?". Games like Diablo are the best.

      • Yo Big Dawg, re:

'… but I think well drawn 2D graphics can easily compete with low effort design 3D graphics'

Two-dimensional graphics can be really artistic, skilfully employed, and engaging. I've loved games like 'Inside', 'Valiant Hearts', and 'Neighbors From Hell', just to name a few.

Re the motion sickness thing, maybe you are right on the money with the big screens thing … have you ever tried playing on a really small screen; like on one of those little 'Steam' machines? Not that you would be able to join your friends on Steam games on it, but just to test the theory, maybe you could have a go on a kid's 'Switch' and see if that works better for you re the motion sickness?

  • Thanks OP!
