Need new SSD for my HP ProBook 440 G8 Notebook

Hi,

HP ProBook 440 G8 Notebook PC (2Q531AV)

Currently has a 500GB SSD

I would like to upgrade it to at least 1TB.

Which model SSD can I use?

  • You need an M.2 NVMe SSD. HP doesn't say whether its gen4 or only gen3. Probably the latter. If you look up in Windows, or open the cover, you can see what brand and model it is. Do that, and tell us here.

If 500GB isn't enough think about how long 1TB will be enough. Now is a good time to buy M.2 SSDs at good prices. Prices will start going back up in a couple of months. It might be a good opportunity to get a 2TB drive at a good price.

There are slow gen3 drives really cheap. Unless you want really cheap they're probably not a great purchase.

There are fast gen3 drives - read 3500 write 3000 - that are probably what you want.

There are gen4 and gen5 drives that are way faster than that, but only in a computer that supports gen4 and gen5 drives, so its probably not worth you paying the extra. Unless your computer does support a gen4 or gen5 drive. If yours does, spend the extra.

Decide whether you want the reassurance of a top name brand like Samsung, at the top price. Or whether you're happy with something cheaper. Watch for an OzBargain for the sort of brand and size you want being sold by someone you're happy to do business with. If the other OzBargainers say it a good one, buy it. They are all interchangeable with each other.

  • Thanks for your advice.

I will only use it for emails, browsing and photoshop.

  • SAMSUNG MZVLQ512HALU-000H1

    Uses the m2 (?) interface.

I can easily install the NVMe but not sure which model to pick ha ha ha…

    • OK, that's a Samsung PM991, which is actually a pretty slow old gen3 SSD.

Pretty much anything you choose, no matter how cheap, will be at least as fast as that Samsung.

The obvious replacement Samsung would be a 970 Evo plus, that's currently just under $100 for 1TB at most places.

From WD you'd be looking at an SN570 that's a bit cheaper at well under $100.

From Kingston you'd be looking at a NV2, which is gen4, but that's OK, it'll work, and its cheaper still.

Its just not any use trying to go to their even cheaper models because the decent ones aren't much more expensive. And there's no use paying more because all these are as fast as a gen3 socket will run at.
