Hi, I am wondering if I can use a coles gift card to buy a SIM card? I get gift cards for doing surveys and I am wondering if it would work to buy a SIM card. I know it works for prepaid recharges but not sure about SIM card.

If you have a Coles Groceries gift card (aka Coles Groceries & Returns gift card) with a gift card number starting with 6273 4000 or 6273 4005, the answer is no. You will trigger an Invalid Product Mix error on the EFTPOS terminal as soon as you scan or swipe the gift card to attempt redemption. The reason I mention this is that Prezzee once accidentally restocked their Coles gift card page with Coles Groceries gift cards.
If you have a Coles gift card with a gift card number starting with 6273 4010, I am actually not sure what the situation is today.
A couple of years ago, I tried to purchase a Telstra SIM card at a self checkout using such a Coles gift card, but as soon as I pressed Gift Card on the payment screen, I got a message on the payment screen saying that gift cards cannot be used to purchase gift cards.
Coles brought in restrictions (i.e. the Invalid Product Mix error) on 19 April 2023 to stop customers from using any kind of gift card issued by Coles Group to pay for any gift cards at Coles. I do not know whether Coles extended these restrictions to SIM cards at the same time, especially since the activation of a SIM card is handled very similarly to a third-party gift card at Coles; if Coles actually did that, I would be quite surprised, because the Gift Card Terms of Use do not specifically call out SIM cards or phone cards as ineligible products.
If you have a Coles gift card from the Flybuys Rewards Store with a gift card number starting with 6273 4070, I have no idea, because I have only ever used those gift cards for grocery purchases. However, it looks like the Coles gift card from the Flybuys Rewards Store is simply just a rebranded version of the "regular" Coles gift card…

Do you know if this new error extend to Prepaid recharge vouchers? I tried a couple of months ago and it worked.

The last time I purchased a prepaid recharge voucher using a Coles gift card was over a year ago.
What about Woolworths gift cards. Can you buy SIM cards with Woolworths gift cards?
I don’t think so.
I have seen recent-ish reports that you cannot use Woolworths Group gift cards to pay for amaysim, Lebara and Belong SIM cards, although if you look at the Belong comment, it may be possible to pay for a Vodafone SIM card.
It may be worth getting @Neoika to tell you which SIM cards cannot be purchased at Woolworths using Woolworths Group gift cards (assuming they know anything else that I have not mentioned already).
Honestly, I think you would have a better chance of using a Coles gift card to pay for a SIM card than a Woolworths Group gift card to pay for a SIM card, because I have a feeling that the Coles gift card person you called is wrong…

Sometimes Rep may say something no, but actually yes.
I can tell you more that most if not all the Prepaid handset that are usually locked in the cupboard can be paid by eGC. One of the indicators may be whether you earn rewards points on it. If no point, most likely eGC is not payable.
