Cycle for Occasional Ride in The Park

I am looking for a bike to ride along with the kids. Basically an occasional ride in the park - so nothing fancy necessary. It needs to fit in the back of a minivan (a Kia carnival - so generally everything seems to fit in there). Any recommendations for a good value for money bicycle?

    Kmart

    • sorry dude but 90% of kmart stuff is landfill within 3 months.

    • Just no. Pick up a quality bike second hand for the same money instead.

Kmart bikes are cheap, but horribly cheap. They are hard to adjust to work well, brakes are usually pretty poor and they will be heavier than an equivalent second hand bike shop brand bike. They also have cheap steel components that will rust 40seconds after they get wet.

    • Kmart!

For a bike you ride once and never want to touch again, Kmart is unbeatable.

Scamtree or Fartbook and just buy the one closest to you.

Hard garbage night and just go for a walk and pick the one you like.

I picked up a second hand Trek Marlin 5 off of FB marketplace for $250 for the exact purpose you mentioned and it does the job absolutely fine, although i did git new maxxis tyres.

Second hand all the way. Just make sure it fits you. Online guides can help with sizing, then throw a leg over before you purchase to check it’s reasonably comfortable.

You should be able to pick up a decent quality bike for $150. I purchased good bikes for $150 over the years.

Pick mountain bike, hybrid or step though according to your taste. Suspension is not at all necessary and just adds weight.

Look for quick release wheels for ease of chucking in the van. I’m going to assume you’ll be carting kids and kids bikes in it, so will likely need to remove a wheel to make it easier to fit.

  • I am trying to pick between a second hand giant roam 2 and a new trek Dual Sport 1 Gen 4. They are both near the 500$ range. Any thoughts on what would be better?

    • Spending on which actual model the giant is, it appears to be better. 9speed rear gears bs 8 plus hydraulic disc brakes on the giant. Hydraulic brakes are pretty good, mechanical discs can be a bit fiddley to set up.

I bought a damaged roam a few years ago. Rode it a few time and was quite good to ride. Have since put most of the running gear on a non-damaged frame.

But end of the day, they’re not a lot in it and both would be good bikes - provided the fit you.
