Getting started with DJ Gear

Hi Everybody,

Recently, I embarked on a pursuit of teaching myself the basics of mixing with some basic DJ decks. It's always been a skill I wanted to teach myself, and with the prices of digital DJ gear, I deemed it affordable. It's been about 4 months, and I'm slowly getting better, and really enjoying creating and having fun with the technology; despite my terrible ability.

Recently, I've been browsing Store DJ (storedj.com.au) for a roadcase, and have come across some of their bundle deals.

If anybody was in a frame of mind that they may want to start pursuing mixing as a hobby, I would highly recommend looking at their lowest tier bundle deal, with the DDJ Ergo by Pioneer. It's a beginner DJ controller, and it presents reasonable value for a "full solution" to get you up and running.

Hope this helps somebody out!

Kind Regards,

    Great post QW3RTY!

Got any website or youtube channels you recommend to learning the basics to DJ'ing?

I think I'm more interested in creating music from scratch than remix'ing, but am still interested. All music is good music :D

    • Hi!

A friend recommended me to watch some Ellaskins, he's got a great way to communicate the basics, and has some tips and tricks to get the fundamentals down-pat! Here's his channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ellaskins

Other than that, I've just been browsing YouTube finding DJs who play music styles that I enjoy and watching their videos!

  • scratching kinda requires turntables, which requires a proper setup, which requires $$$. :(

you can try scratching digitally, but it totally aint cool. maybe one turntable if youre really interested.

    • All the cool kids are using vinyls anyway. :/

    • I've always wondered about this, where do we even buy vinyls in Aus? And do they release them for lots of new songs? First time I listened to a vinyl the quality just fucking blew me away.

Always been interested in scratching ever since listening to Kid Koala/a-trak.

      • I can name half a dozen stores that basically sell ONLY vinyl, in Melbourne that is. There's heaps when you start looking.
Lots of hip hop, funk, and dance/electro music will get vinyl release, and more rock than you might think too. Its mostly pop that gets lumped with low quality digital formats.

  • imo i believe a traktor s2 would probably be best suited for someone starting out.. best program going and s2 has total integration
