  • Bring on the Intel 330 Series 240 GB for $200

    • best price on ozbargain was one from BHvideo for like $175.25
      http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/75574
so $200 isnt even close to impulse buy

      • I meant local

        • Intel have international warranty I believe, so local isn't a huge advantage.

can do better.. 198.. just buy 2 lol

the Kingston SSDNow V+200 120GB for $89 seems to be cheaper than the intel 330 -
Read: 535 MB/s, Write: 480 MB/s, Read: 20,000 IOPS, Write: 44,000 IOPS - isnt that better tha the intel? :S

Intel>Kingston for reliability. That's why Intel costs so much, they're just more reliable.

      • That used to be the case before they moved to the Sandforce controller…

As you may know, the Sandforce isn't the best controller going around, but Intel might have given it the magic tweak.

Either way you can't go past the Crucial M4 for reliability. Samsung 830 also.

I also encourage everyone to read the SSD Write Endurance thread.

Yes that may be true but Intel writes their own firmware and (IIRC) use in house NAND chips which greatly improves reliability and performance (even using their own firmware is a huge gain over other ssd's using standard sandforce firmware).

Although Intel uses the sandforce controller, the 520 still competes with the Crucial M4 and Samsung 830. (Still waiting on Sandisk's offerings to prove themselves in reliability before I make a judgement on them).

However in terms of cheaper alternatives the 330 is still one of the best if not the best "budget" drives available.

I'd choose between the 520, M4 and 830 depending on who has the best price.

      • I have been using SSD,s for over a year and my Kingston goes well , and i know of friends with the Crucial M4 having issues… and ive never had any

    • Even though it uses the same controller, Intel have their own custom firmware which is most likely more reliable.

Also Intel SSDs come with a full retail package which includes:
      -3.5-inch adapter bracket and screws
      -SATA3 data cable
      -Molex to SATA power adapter
-Link to free data Migration software (transfer old windows install to new SSD)
-Link to Intel SSD Toolbox software

Samsung 830 256GB $252 at MSY (yes I know its MSY but still cheaper by $1) - "Sale" price from CentreCom is $253…. bargain?

  • +1

Can we actually opt to pickup from a store? eg. the samsung 830 256gb. i just live 10 mins from one…. :/

Kingston is cheaper at Shopping Square. Intel cheaper at Centrecom.

  • Got an Intel 330 thanks

    • Got an Intel too :)

  • $5 shipping to 2120 is also very reasonable…

  • yes, unlike shoppingsquare had $9.95 shopping, now for the same sale, shopping gone up to $12.95

  • I just sent my ocz octane 128 ssd back to centrecom that's been nothing but trouble, will see if they will let me upgrade instead of replacing.

    • Did you try RMA through OCZ directly?

A lot of folks have been saying that they've been given higher spec drives as replacements for failed Octanes (ie Vertex, Agility etc).

      • Oh?!?! Damn. Didn't try them, called up centrecom and they just told me to send it in. But then again I'm a bit weary to use ocz again.

        • Fair enough, it's worth noting that you can also use the existing anecdotal evidence base to support your claim through Centrecom for the upgrade/swap you're seeking as well. I'm sure your local Fair Trading office will deem that evidence (known issues) enough for your purposes! Good luck with it! :)

  • Does anyone know which of these comes with the kit to mount it in a desktop drive? I think the Intel 330 does but it doesn't really specify in the descriptions?

    • yep Intel 330 definitely does, just bought one the other day. I don't think the Samsung 830 comes with anything.

  • Which of the sub $100 128Gb units is the best one? I'm leaning toward the Liteon due to the benchmarks previously provided by Scorptec.

EDIT The scorptec listed model is Liteon S100, whereas this one @ $89 is model Liteon M3S MLC with a bit over half the write speed.

Centercom want $184 for the Liteon S100 which Scorptec have for $119 !??

Totally off topic - has anyone seen the Centercom ad on TV with the staff members from Clayton store acting as 'customers'? lol, prob the only way they could get people not returning or complaining or being totally daft (punk).

    • If you want reliability then Intel 330, followed by the Liteon. The Liteon uses the marvel controller, same as the Crucial M4, which has proven to be more reliable than generic sandforce drives.

    • I think the samsung is worth the extra $15

  • So indecisive: to wait, or not to wait :S
Come on, ShoppingExpress, let's see a price war!

  • This is a noob question:

Is SSD compatible with all PC? What sort of components do I need to look for to see if I can install SSD on my PC? Or do the SSDs come with some sort of converter/adapter to connect a SATA cable to it?

    Thanks

    • Yes, it's just like any SATA HDD. Unless you have really old PCs that use IDE HDDs (they are ones that have ugly wide ribbon cables).

      • You should also make sure that you are running an operating system that natively supports TRIM. In layman terms, something newer than Windows Xp.

        • thanks… I got Windows 7. So it should be good.

        • You'll still need to check that TRIM is enabled though, whilst Windows 7 picks up the SSD on installation most of the time, it occasionally misses & you need to do it manually. The same goes if you're migrating an image over from another (mechanical - HDD) drive!

Just google "Windows 7 enable TRIM"…there's a zillion & one how-to's out there on da interwebz! :)

  • $99 for the Intel is so tempting….even though i dont use my PC that much now days

  • for a laptop, do i require the kit aswell?
    cheers

    • +1

      Not for a laptop.

  • Why is 520 so much more expensive than 330? Both are the same drive but 520 has an extra 2 years warranty if I'm not mistaken. What other differences are there?

    • 520 is faster & more durable, suitable for daily intensive workloads. 330 is good enough for most people.
