Recommend a NAS to Replace an Older 2 Bay Synology

I'm after a replacement for a problematic Synology DS21XJ for a friend.

I'm out of the loop when it comes to NASs. I also haven't seen many deals recently and the deals I have seen don't seem to be too popular.

My current thinking is to simply replace with a newer version - DS 220j. What is the current recommendation for an off the shelf storage solution? Is there better value for money?

Requirements:

  • iOS apps for music

Nice to haves:

  • Plex server( transcoding probably not needed)

Budget - ideally around $200(excluding HDDs), though flexible if there is a compelling reason to spend more.

At $200 wont get you far.

    • What would you recommend spending? Any suggested products?

At that price point you are probably better off getting a terramaster when a deal comes up. I got my Synology 918+ for $300ish only due to a price error

Ive got a ds220+ and it pretty much does anything you can throw at it.

Agreed with the user above, not sure if you can get much in the $200 price range. I have the Synology 220j which is $223 at 25 percent off right now.

And honestly its fairly average. I use Emby which runs okay but any transcoding at all kills it and its quite slow. As a file server it seems okay too. As a single person not doing much, its acceptable but in the future I'd probably just put that bit more into it and not get a ***j model.

Just buy old pc parts and make your own nas from it

    • Unfortunately, this doesn't work in this situation as

      • less technical users - ideally, a set-up-and-forget style situation
      • there is a requirement for the device to be compact and quiet.

Personally, I have an N40L and an m700 used for different tasks and will likely end up just using an old-pc for the next iteration.
