Tried it a while back. The original is better.
Plus, you can sort of stir-fry the original as well if you really want. Just don't put in all the soup, since it gets a bit salty.

    • Highly recommend this over it if you can find an Asian Grocer in Australia that stocks it.

      https://eatirvins.sg/products/nissin-salted-egg-instant-nood…

      • haven't found any yet, any ideas?

      • +2

These are equally tasty and much easier to find in lots of Asian supermarkets and in some woolies by the looks of it, and also much cheaper.

        https://www.woolworths.com.au/shop/productdetails/122207

        • +2

How is it cheaper when its $1.90 a pack. When the nissin is around $1.40 each.

And the nissin is heavier per pack.

          • @xoom: The taste is differ. Nissin is Korean noodle while Mama is Thai noodle

            • @Bii: Was only stating price difference. Which is cheaper. I know they would taste different.

            • +1

              @Bii: Nissin is Japanese though.

          • @xoom: I've never seen the Irvin's ones for under $2.00. The mama OK ones I got on sale for 80c, usually around $1 from the Asian supermarkets I go to. I was merely commenting on them being available at woolies, not suggesting you buy from there. The link was merely to show people the product.

            • @NoApostrophePlurals: I will have a look at the Asian supermarket for Mama. $1 is almost 1/2 the price at WW so good to stock up some

        • This seems to never be on a decent discount

      • I dont think i have seen this in any Asian Grocer that i have been to.
If any of you like mild sort of spicy flavor (may be spicier for some), I would recommend Maggi Kari that from Asian Grocer.
(Disclaimer: It could be very additive, you may have trouble getting stock sometimes because it seems running out pretty quick)

      • That looks awesome

    • I tried and adore the favour and texture. Would be more premium and hence no further discount.

    • +1

just gave it a try, more saucy compared to the soup, same hotness, would buy again

  • +1

How about black label? Regular shin is just a touch too fiery for me these days.

    • +1

Love the black. It is pretty spicy too though.

      • +2

        Once you go black…

        • +1

You are left with a hungry gaping hole…mouth

    • Love Black. I don't normally drink the broth (too salty, too spicy) but I have to stop myself from finishing the bowl.

    • black label is even more flavourful!
Pour the boiling soup and noodles into the bowl with a raw egg.

      • -1

        Raw is war

    • +4

what if i told you, you don't need to add all the seasoning

  • +4

I can only handle this with 1/3rd of the sauce…

    • +5

Keep increasing it and you will build up your tolerance.

Pro tip. Add bochoy to this.

      • +3

You can almost add any mild taste leafy choy (veggies) to it e.g lettuce if it is easier for you to get them. They would be just as good and it bulk up your meal in a healthy way as well.

        • +2

Nothing healthy about eating packet noodles

      • My spice journey, ramping it up:

        Mama shrimp flavoured (tomyum)
        V
        Shin ramyung (These)
        V
Shin Ramyung Red Super Spicy or
        Buldak Spicy Chicken
        V
        Paldo Volcano Chicken Noodle and
        Buldak x2 Spicy Chicken.

I think spicier than this starts to really compromise flavour - even then, the Volcano ones aren't as nice as Shin Super Spicy.

    • +1

You probably think pepper is hot

    • Yeah I got plenty of sauce left for other brands of noodles…

    • also try using milk instead of water, it should mellow out the spice. Mushroom campbell's soup has been trending recently too.

I don't think the ozbargain community is aware?

"Nongshim ramen products face scrutiny after recall over cancer-causing chemical"

    https://news.yahoo.com/nongshim-ramen-products-face-scrutiny…

Maybe someone should start a thread

    • That is why it is on discount.

    • +2

From memory the Aussie export ones are different? I can't find anything supporting that though… Hmmmm…..

To be honest the whole industry of instant ramen and mystery powder in plastic/coated foil packaging can't be healthy anyway, we're kidding ourselves if we think EO is the only issue with these. There must be all sorts of weird and untested decomposition or metabolism by products going on before and after consumption. I know that's true for everything, but just the extreme number of supply chains and manufacturing steps for all the ingredients has to blow that risk out for such a highly processed product.

      better article to read… https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-03-19/imported-foods-chemic…

the yahoo news article confused between Taiwan and Thailand, Taiwan was the country that found the substance not Thailand
Thai(land) FDA did announced the sale brand of the product and block import of about 3000 cups.

Add other shit to it to make it a complete meal.

  • is this vegetarian? from the ingredients it appears so, but lot of "flavor enhancers" which are just codes, not sure what they made of

    • +1

No it isn't. I thought it was but there's dehydrated meat in the dried object sachet.

      • thank you, doesn't say this on the ingredients list- was wondering which one of the "hidden" ingredient contains meat, so i can keep an eye on other products as well

        • Seems I might be wrong, see RSmith's comment below. And the 'meat' might be soy based.

I do recall checking it before buying it a while ago. I wouldn't have bought it if it contained mean. But then I had a bowl and was chewing on something and was convinced it was pork. But seems I may have been mistaken. Checking the ingredients again there's no mention of meat.

      • +7

I don't think there is any meat in the ones that are sold in Australia. The "dehydrated meat" is most likely made from soy beans.

        • Thanks for the correction. I've been seduced by chewing soy fake meat!

          • +2

@huggsymersh: Hey guys- UPDATE! I sent an email to Nongshim australia to clarify this, they confirmed there are no animal products in these noodles :)

Now the vegetarians/vegans too can enjoy these unhealthy noodles without guilt, enjoy!

    • Depends on where it's made in. But a vegetarian friend of mine tells me they are in Australia.

    • This particular pack is vegan according to Fussy Vegan, however some other varieties contain fish, beef, pork

      • Yes, i got email confirmation from nongshim, this is vegan friendly

  • +2

I like to add Cabanossi to it whilst cooking.

Lettuce in the bottom of the serving bowl.

I tried adding slice cheese but it dissolves into the soup instantly and you can't taste it.

    • and poached egg

      • Do you poach it separately? It breaks apart when I cook it with the noodles.

        • +1

Drop slowly to the middle of the noodle (so the noodle acts as holding place)
          Then stir slowly

    • After it’s cooked, pour the noodles into a bowl and add sliced cheese then, wait about 30 secs for the cheese to melt and it will stick nicely to the noodles (2 slices is good for me).
Also it has to be those processed cheese slices, like kraft singles or something similar.

      • +1

I'll try this. I only use 1 slice and probably way too much water.

  • +3

I bought over 100 packs when OB put me onto them @ $2.50 many many moons ago.
I still have plenty and still absolutely love them!

    • +1

yeah they get yummier after past exp date.
      just like wine…..

  • All hail Shin Ramyun, but waiting for Black instead

  • There are people whose commode caught fire the next day morning after they ate this for dinner

    • You call it a commode…

  • Add milk and half seasoning to make it mild. Let me know if any other tips. Thanks

    • +2

add chunks of left over lamb/pork roast while boiling, takes it to the next level

    • +2

Any fat or oil containing additive helps dissolve and dilute the capsaicin, piperine, etc. and helps knock the spice down a notch.

Cheese, meats, eggs, milk, butter, etc.

  • Kimchi one is by far the best best best!

  • +1

TheHan kitchen range in WW is pretty good also. Obviously only buy on half price special! (Ended yesterday in VIC)

  • Think I saw these for $3.99 at tong li in Sydney.

    • which Tong Li?

      • Hornsby, just confirmed on my receipt $3.99 each.

    • Different Tong Li run different specials I've found. Might not get the same price in another store.

  • Anyone tried chapaghetti? I think Nong Shim do their own too but wondering what brands are good.

    • +1

Chapaghetti is only made by Nongshim, other brands have their own jjajangmyeon-style noodles (Samyang Chacharoni etc.). Chapaghetti is the most popular though.

    • +1

I like the spicy variation of Chapaghetti, not sure why but I feel like the regular one is missing another flavour apart from the spice. Zha wang (spicy) is another tasty one but both are pretty spicy so it might be better to opt for the regular ones if you find Shin Ramen spicy. You can also kill a bit of the spice by adding in an indomie mi goreng but that does up the calories quite a bit, very yummy though 🤤.

      My preference would be SpicyChapa>SpicyZhawang>Zhawang>Chapa

    • Chapaghetti is not really to my taste, however I quite like Chapaguri (which is their version of Chapaghetti and Neoguri combined, made popular by the movie Parasite).

  • Nongshim Kimchi also on special for $75c more

  • Wife bought a pack from a local Asian Grocery for $3.80 recently. As pointed out above, can be had at some Tong Lis for $3.99, so I think sub-$4 is readily achievable.

  • Thanks OP….Still my go-to Noodle

  • Well, Yes, Shin ramyeon is a steady seller, it is bit old school though.
I recommend Jin Ramyeon series over Shin as they are more on trend and better tastes.

    • +1

Go Jin if you can’t handle the heat of Shin

Shin black maybe hard to beat

      • Nope nope. I've been eating Shin since I was 7, bruh. It's not about the heat. Just the taste changed a lot, and no longer the same as it was great.! Original Shin was square-shaped noodles.

        • +1

Well that’s the main point of difference. Shin is super spicy and Jin is much more mild.

Recently had the kimchi Shin and Jin and can confirm the Shin version was more rich and flavourful. Both are similar enough that you should just buy whichever is cheaper at the time. Texture wise of the noodles I prefer the soft chewy noodles of Shin

          • @MuddyClear: Are u talking about the Blue colour Jin?
As a Shin eater for decades, sorry Shin is not much spicier than Jin Red. They are just similar level and shin is no longer same taste as mentioned.

  • Slice of American cheese on top = amaaaazing.

  • funny how no one mentioned adding spam to it as a budaejigae and talking about spicy, try angry random for a challenge.

    • Pan seared spam or non-pan seared spam?

And why hasn’t Amazon price matched?

  • Where can I buy the seasoning only?

  • Anyone recommend Asian shop that stocks a wide range of Asian instant noodle packs and does Australia wide or NSW delivery for a reasonable fee?

    • +3

I had trouble finding somewhere with a large selection that did reasonable shipping. For large orders, shipping came to around $40 or more on average.

I did a quick google just then and found this site for a very, very limited range of mainly Malaysian instant noodles, https://www.justgoshop.com.au/
Free Australia wide shipping on orders over $110. I just made an order. Prices aren't the best, either, but I am in regional NSW and they had enough stuff to interest me so I gave it a shot.

      • I just got this email. Still worth it I guess.

"I hope you are having a great week.

I'm trying to book a courier for your order, and the delivery quote I received for your order came back from the courier much higher than expected. Please take a look at the screenshot below.

Unfortunately, the high shipping cost is due to the regional NSW shipping address.
The cost we provided is based on the metro area, and the recent back-to-back price increases (incl the new fuel surcharge) by all the couriers have made it more expensive to service regional areas.

The free shipping offer is only available to metro areas.
Since your order is regional, we will subsidise part of the regional shipping cost.
You will need to cover the remaining $15.99 ($33.99 - $18.00) if you want to proceed.

I know this is not the email you would like to receive, but our hands are tied with all the price increases.

Please let me know how you'd like to move forward.

        Cheers,
        Ian"

  • Thanks. I am in the same boat but not that regional at the moment. It is more the case if they have all the items i want, then the order would be large, but even when you are in an Asian store these days it can be hit and miss what stock they have, Amazon has some on min 3 pack orders but not the others and regional Coles and Woolworths have far more limited options.

  • Coles catalog says $5 for me but online $4.45
