I'm not sure why the other title hasn't been modified yet.
But this is a much better deal

  • I don't see a difference in this and weber just branding

      • The reviews for this on catch are good

        • The reviews on product review and dog poo though

The difference is one will last ages, the other one won't.

Definitely dont agree with that in terms of bbq's. Got a kmart cheap bbq 4 burner rrp was 100 got it for 50. Lasted 10 years until we moved out and then sold it. We used it like 20 times a year.

        • +1

Yeah…I had a cheap Jackaroo that lasted 20 years and was still whole when we got rid of it. Dragged that thing all over Australia.

I only got my first Weber (Baby Q) a couple of years ago, and it's night and day. The Jackaroo didn't have any build issues, but it simply wasn't on the same level in terms of cook or even cleanup.

Have had other BBQ's too, including electric….nothing has brought the game like the Weber.

Now I just need permission to get a bigger model. The Baby Q is used a LOT though, and that probably says it all. We prefer the flavour it imparts (and this is a function of the grill/burner design and hood/ventilation), and routinely choose to prepare any cooked portions of our meals on it rather than the stovetop or oven in the kitchen.

          • @Banj0: oh interesting. might have to study up on it. Didn't think there would be much difference in cooking and clean-up. Thought you just attach gas, put meat and put the hood down, and all BBQ's basically did the same thing cook the meat. But if Weber somehow manages to cook it more evenly, tender and more tasty then yeah would say definitely worth the extra if it's night and day

            • @michael9865: Cleanup probably depends on the BBQ materials and heat I guess? With previous BBQ's I've had to scrub them and use some sort of liquid (even the traditional thing of tipping beer on it). They were just messy overall though.

With the Q, I just vaporise all the grease and gunk on the plates with heat, and brush it off. Every few cooks I use a scraper to clean the firebox up a bit (just to push gunk down through the hole in the middle), and then I empty the grease tray beneath every now and then. Seems easier than any other BBQ I've used.

This Gasmate Odyssey's do seem like a very similar thing, and I was tempted to buy one to supplement our Weber, but now with those reviews!

              • @Banj0: I've got a Ziggy twin which is similar to the Weber and the gasmate. I saw a lot of mixed reviews at the start but a lot of them seem to be from people who nuke food at high temps. I've been using mine 4-5 times per week for the last two years and it's been working great, just gotta stick to low and slow cooking and you'll end up with soft tender steaks and great roasts. Downside of the Ziggy is that it gets plenty hot on the low setting but I just do off heat cooking when I'm doing more temp sensitive cooking like roasts and just have one side of the bbq on.

Been keeping an eye out for the gasmate BBQs as an extra bbq as the Ziggy twin isn't big enough to handle roasting meat and veg at the same time. I run out of space when I off heat cook 4 racks of beef ribs. Ordered the Odyssey 3T from catch since that's on sale for $215 ish. Hopefully it will be good. The upside of Ziggy and Weber BBQs is the boatload of accessories available that don't seem to be available for the gasmate, but from what I can see it should still do what I want it to do.

  • What sort of gas bottle connects to these?
    Would this? https://www.bigw.com.au/product/companion-resealable-propane…

Get an exchange cylinder if you're going to use it frequently.

If you're not going to use it frequently, get an exchange cylinder.

      ;-)

  • Can I connect this to mains gas supply at home or can only use with LPG bottles?

    • +2

Almost certainly you would need a conversion to connect it to mains, like every other bbq, unless they sell a mains version

      • Agree…no way. Would need a conversion kit or a mains specific BBQ.

      • Thanks.

  • Tossing between electric and gas. Thoughts?

    • Electric if you are in a unit, otherwise gas.

      • +1

        is electric still considered bbqing?

        • +2

Electric and gas is not a real BBQ, charcoal is the only way.

  • +2

Wouldnt buy it, i owned one paint chipping flaking dodgy hinge. wouldn't trust to eat from it…

    Get a weber baby q

  • electric showing as $154?

  • Both gas and electric OOS

  • back in stock?

  • +1

Single units appear to be available every now and then.

    Probably cancelled orders.

I managed to order a gas one today. I know the reviews aren't great but at quarter the cost of a Weber Q1000, this was an easier sell to the missus.

    • I ordered the bigger brother Odyssey 3T from catch since it was on sale. It was hundreds cheaper than the Ziggy triple I was originally keeping an eye out for. Quality is definitely cheaper than the Ziggy triple.

Also kinda feels like a bait and switch, or maybe it's just poor QC and bad build quality. The model number on the box matches the listing description but the gas burner rating on the one I received is higher than the rating listed on the ad (I'm assuming I was sent a different revision) and the side open grill plate doesn't have the same flame tamer design as what is shown in the ad - the pictured open grill side plate has a flat plated bit over the flame for better heat transfer and to avoid fats dripping onto the flame which is what I expected, what I got was an open grill plate with a single flat plated bit running from one side to the other and not covering the flame, so fats can drip onto the flame. The plastic bits didn't fit together nicely, had to bend some bits while screwing them down. The middle plate also doesn't sit flush, it wobbles. Also might just be because it's the first run, but the temperature gauge was very slow to respond compared to my Ziggy twin. After finding all these issues I was kinda surprised it passed a leak test.
