Tesla Halts Sale of Right-Hand-Drive X and S Models

Tesla halts sale of right-hand-drive X and S models in UK with immediate effect

Wonder how long till it affects AU

Tesla has stopped selling right-hand-drive Model X and S with immediate effect – offering anyone who has ordered one in the UK a left-hand-drive car instead.

In an email to customers today, the American electric car manufacturer told customers that they could either take delivery of a left-hand-drive model or ‘just cancel’ their order.

If customers do convert their reservation for a Model X to a Model 3 or Y, Tesla is offering them £2,000 as a credit to ‘thank them for their support’.

No mention of any reason yet.

The trade publications say production rationalisation/simplification. I believe all their production facilities are in LHD countries, and they've built RHDs in batches. Stop the line, switch everything that needs to be over, and build RHDs. Then stop it again and switch back. Why bother for the lower volume models that they just aren't selling enough RHDs for it to be worth the trouble.

No mention of any reason yet.

I believe it has to do with the polarity of their batteries.

How long till it takes affect? They have already removed the S and X from the AU Tesla website, sooooo, I would say "immediately"

    From Drive

The announcement comes after pre-orders were paused in Australia in April 2023

Buyers who ordered a vehicle are being offered $3000 towards a new Model 3 or Model Y – but it will only be valid for orders placed before 31 October 2023.

Hard to halt something they never started.

      • Well, it could be said they had plans to produce RHD versions, so is a plan a means of production? Did they have some tooling made for firewall/brake/steering/lighting systems? But I am of the opinion it never got past the budgeting stage and they just used the millions of $'s and £'s as interest free development loans, just like the cyber(sham)truck.

I'm guessing the demand wasn't there for them, it also appears something is happening in Fremont factory, the only place that makes the S/X in the world, they have applied to pull down a heap of stuff and make some big changes. Guessing no room for the RHD line now or not worth the outlay.

LOL Tesla has been cash positive for years, they didn't need the $400 deposits for development loans as claimed and if they did, why turn around and give $3k AUD back as a discount?

            @JimmyF:

they have applied to pull down a heap of stuff and make some big changes.

Elon Musk is building his new mansion there

            • @jv: He sleeps on the office floor - no need for a mansion.

        • so is a plan a means of production?

no, preparing for production is not the same as production.

Wonder how long till it affects AU

    Old news

  • Whats different about Model 3 & Y that they aren't affected?

    • +2

Way way cheaper, sell like hotcakes and Australian stock is made in China.

    • +2

The structural body of the car. The 3 and Y body can be used interchangeably, hence resulting in lower cost due to the streamline nature of production.

S and X do not follow this suit and have a mirrored structural body based on the market which results in higher cost

  • @JimmyF will tell you that you guys can't afford it buy a model 3 instead because Elon is god.

Already happened, those who had them on order in Australia, received the 'email'.

  • +4

damn, was about to order 3,000 of them
    .

      No Yield Investment

  • Can they ship em to OZ and do a 70% off deal ?

  • See hardly any of them, see heaps of Model3 though

    • Well the model X is butt ugly and the S is so bloody expensive. So many better EVs in that price bracket now.

The model 3 is booming with the FOMO, Look at me on Instagram, beating the Jones' movement.

      • -1

Nah, Model 3 is dying in the arse, it's all about the Model Y now. 6 months ago, Model 3 used were $70k+, now, you can pick up a used 2020 Model 3 with 30,000km on it for under $50k. By the end of the year, I am 100% sure you will be able to pick up a lightly used, 2019~2020, low km Tesla Model 3 for around $40K to $45k.

All the Tesla fanbois trying to sell their cars into a saturated market when all the other Tesla fanbois are also trying to sell theirs because they also bought a new Model Y. So much for all their "YoU NeVer LoSe MoNeY oN BuYiNg a TeSLa…" bullshit they carry on with… (Cant find the link to it, but there was a guy on here who claimed he was flipping Model S/X's for profit…)

  • $3k from Elon and $6k from Albanese and don't forget Ozbargain referral link https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/758988

  • i wonder how it will affect the 2nd hand car on X and S

  • +2

Remember when the Model Y was released in Australia? No? Well it hasn’t even been one year yet and look how many there are on the roads already.
Things change in the blink of an eye with Tesla.
They could bring the RHD X and S tomorrow for all we know.

  • Plenty of other car companies offering electric right hand drive cars.

Plenty of other car companies offering better electric right hand drive cars.

  • Also says "Specs displayed are US values. US model shown. Model S is not currently available to order in Australia." on the feature page for each of these models.

  • Probably because they couldn't move the indicator stalk
