New to Sydney - where for meat & veg?

Hi everyone,

I am curious- where is the best place to buy meat & veg in Sydney? I'm talking around the city area. I've looked in a wooltworths, and generally it seems pricey.

Where I am from, I normally paid a little over $1.20 a kilo for veges like tomotoes, eggplants, zuccini's etc, and around $6-7 a kilo for breast chic, and cuts of porc in the supermarkets.

I don't expect sydney to be that cheap, but are there better places than the supermarket?

Thanks

I haven't been to Sydney in a while
    But here's some

    Paddington
    Paddy's Markets

  • Meat: Depends how far you're willing to travel outside the city, and if you're willing to buy meat in bulk. But if you're going to stay in the city, forget it.

Your best bet is meat wholesalers, maybe even 10minutes outside the city. I get meat in bulk from A&S Select Meats in Mascot and I pay $5.50 a kilo, that being said I'm buying a yearling which I get together with a relative and we halve it, which is about 240kilos (120kilos between two families). One upright freezer fits everything easily. They ask you how thick you like your steaks and cut it all up for you and mince the chuck steak if you like. http://www.as-selectmeats.com.au/menu-products

As for veges I agree with issh try Paddy's.

    Hope this helps.

  • I was so surprised at vege's actually, why are they so much more expensive than europe?

I'll look at Paddy's too, but which are Paddington's? I thought that was more of a craft market. Or am i thinking of the wrong one?

Yep familiar with A&S, will check them out when I'm in the area.

The Paddy's Market in the city is Market City.

There's another one out in Flemington which is close by a train station. I'm not sure but I think it's only Saturday when the fruit and veg sellers put up stalls there.

      • I think issh meant to write Flemington instead of Paddington, that's a crafts market. Also IIRC it's every day, but parking is free on Sats.

        • What is and where abouts is IIRC?

        • other day, not many stall open, the saturday for retail, monday-friday most of them just selling bulk to the store or restaurant, i went there 2 years ago, only couple stall open and they only selling boxes

  • go to paddys flemington on saturday, make sure you are enter before 2pm, the gate will be close that time and you can not enter, be prepare to buy in box. if you are lucky 1 box of lettuce cost you only $1-2, a box of corn $5, start your bargain close to closing time. if tomatoes in season around $1/kg, they got plenty of chicken and fish as well, not red meat.

  • Yeah Flemmington is probably a bit far to travel on a regular basis, but I will check it out when I'm in that direction… So closest to the city area, I'm looking at Paddy's markets (haymarket). How does aldi compare?

    • you need to buy in bulk, paddy's flemington market, better you go on sunday close to 4pm, then start hunting $1/box, but quality is not as good as the morning one

    • Aldi is cheaper than woolworths/coles but their range isn't as good. Also, the two closest to the city are over the bridge, or down at Danks st Waterloo - the effort getting there probably outweighs the benefits.
Paddy's, haymarket is the best you'll find.
As far as picking a supermarket in the city, Coles World Square is the cheapest and best in my experience (except for fruit/veg).

  • A bit of a late reply, but thanks for all the tips. Paddy's haymarket was pretty good for fruit & veg (flemmington too far at the moment) and I've picked up some decent prices at coles (ie yesterday chicken breast at 4.99/kg). Definetly recommend A&S for meat also, very good quality meat and great prices for sydney.

    • Try Paddy's market on a Sunday at 5.30pm for lowest prices. Market is supposed to finish at 5 but around 5.30 is when real bargains start as they are packing up and are closed on Monday & Tues.
