Car Insurance Claim Question - Not at Fault; What Is The Difference in Private and Business Use?

Hi OzBargainers,

I have two cars and a Van in an Uber Car Share Platform. Recently all three was hit by Budget Direct customer who on a rainy day just slipped off and slid on all three of them. After a long delay the claim was approved. Now the insurance is asking whether the car is for private use or for business use.

Wondering what is the difference between private use and business use when you are at no fault and the opposite insurance company is paying the money?

Thank you in advance.

Possible claim for loss of revenue while the vehicles could not be used for business, perhaps.

    • Ok. Got it.

So that if you have private insurance but the vehicles are used for business, they can deny your claim and not pay out, because you do not have the correct insurance coverage.

    • But they are not his insurer.
They'd have to pay even if OP is uninsured.

      • Thanks Deveshwar0. You are right. I am not insured. I am not at fault and it is just a question as part of the claim.

    • Hi Hybroid, I dont have insurance as it is mostly booked and it is covered during the booking. When unbooked it is safely parked. This is question is from Opposite Insurance Company whether I am using the vehicle for Private or Business purpose as part of their claim question?

      • Ah right, it's the other party's insurance asking, thought you meant you were going through yours as a proxy to the other party's insurance. That makes more sense.

It may affect their valuation of a vehicle possibly?

so if this side swipe'r had done it at 2am, driven off, and left no details….

I suspect we'd get the standard type of post in that case seeking opinions of the brains trust.

@deveshwar0: Something like "help I lost all my income because my share cars are uninsured and got stolen and have to move back in with my parents please help me buy insurance retrospectively and claim so I am not up the creek without a paddle"

    Get insurance.

  • I believe they ask because if you're a business a GST component is included vs private.
