What's The Point of a Smart Monitor

I saw a smart monitor in JB Hifi: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/samsung-m7-32-4k-uhd-smar…

I use a regular monitor and just watch Netflix, etc. on full screen.

Is there a point to a smart monitor?

  • Browse the web, edit documents and work on projects, all without the need for a separate PC.

That’s a kind of cool feature on paper I guess. I’m sure the implementation of it would be terrible though and super niche use case.

I guess the point is to pay marketing people to keep coming up with dumb product ideas.

  • I guess it's more targeted for Game Console, then an actual PC.

    It's basically a glorified TV.

Can't see it being super useful. When would you need to use the "smart" features instead of just using your PC?

I've got one in my sons room and I rate it.

It's essentially a 4k TV with all the various smart tv apps minus the tv tuner which is great because my son doesn't watch any free2air anyway. Its great having a remote so he can use all the smart tv apps (Netflix, Disney+, Plex, Prime & Youtube) and control the volume all from the comfort of his bed and in addition to this I have Dell USFF PC & a Nintendo Switch connected to the 2 HDMI ports.

    • Wish I had a dad like you.

So… it's like every other modern TV but they've taken away the ability to watch FTV for $700 dollars? Something almost every other $700 dollar TV can do?

      Much smart. Such progress.

      • Well for $700 it might be, but i bought it for less than $500 18 months ago through Samsung EPP so it wasnt a bad price at the time given similar 32" 4k Monitors were going for around $400-$500.

Keep in mind though i wouldn't recommend this monitor for a proper workstation as it would be pointless to have all the smart tv features on a screen you are sitting 2 feet away from. However in a kids bedroom or guest room, were it can be utilised as both a computer monitor and also a tv it is great. In my study I've got 2 dedicated workstations which both have thunderbolt docks, one with dual 28" Samsung 4k monitors and the other with dual 24" Dell 2K monitors. I'll use either of those anyday over the single 32" smart monitor.

So it's a 32" standard 60Hz rate TV (minus the tuner) for $700? I still don't get it, what's the advantage to this product?

It's simple, "smart" is code for ruined in marketing and political psychobabble.

A "smart monitor" is a variation on what's known as a "thin client" in computing; a dumb terminal that only sends inputs to and receives outputs from another remote device/host that relies on the said remote device/host to offload all of its processing onto.

Or you could build a SFF HTPC for around the same cost of this sMaRt MoNiToR and have a real "smart" IOT/entertainment hub that you could also work on, that wouldn't end up in landfill in 2-3 years time when Samsung stop releasing firmware updates for it.

Also, Samsung's TizenOS (which this monitor runs) is notoriously full of security vulnerabilities and poorly-coded.

    • I disagree, thin clients are fkn awesome. And cheap. Plenty of computing power (multiples of an rpi4) for cheap (fractions of rpi4). They’ve replaced pi’s for all my stuff that doesn’t need to be mobile.

Hard agree, tizen is coded by the work experience kid who wanted to show off how something can work yet be awful, clunky and not work, all at the same time. Congrats kid, nailed the brief. I’ll never understand why Samsung didn’t just go for android.

I can see the point of this because Windows and streaming do not go together, you're lucky to get 1080p non HDR streams via any of the various apps and websites.

I have a gaming rig plugged into my TV but I still have an AppleTV. On the flip side, I could put this screen in my office and just remote desktop into my PC. It looks like it'd be possible to run Moonlight/Sunshine for remote gaming. Single cable to plug my work laptop into it and power it, if I get bored in meetings I can just flick it over to netflix and still be on the webcam/headphones haha.

Just a shame it's behind the times technology-wise. It has USB ports but USB2 (it'd be great with USB3, have a harddrive plugged in). Bluetooth 4.2.

  • Maybe we've reached the point where economy of scale means smart displays are cheaper than dumb ones. Also this smart monitor has a Netflix button on the remote, and Netflix pay display makers to get a button and also probably just to be a default app https://theconversation.com/netflix-and-other-streaming-gian…

I bet the amount Netflix pays is more than whatever it costs to turn a dumb monitor into a smart monitor, especially for Samsung.

    • Are 'dumb' TVs even available anymore though? Thought that these days they are all 'smart' which basically means they come with standard apps on an OS that never receives security updates.

      • this is a smart monitor (not a TV)

  • Think of this as a tv with a vcr and dvd player built in.
They maybe there but over all it will be crap

Studio apartments? I've seen these (archaic versions of them at least) when I was a uni student living in a student accomodation.

They were terrible but, if you have space for only one appliance, might as well have something that can do bit of monitor and bit of a TV.

  • It saves booting up the computer if you just want to watch YouTube or some other streaming service. Otherwise it's rather pointless and a TV tuner would have been better.
