When to Use a Specific Card

Hi all,

I am very confused on when I should use a certain card, and I would like advice on what card I need, and when to use it.

Current cards:

  • no credit card
  • ING debit card
  • Commbank travel card

What I plan to do:

  • travel overseas 3+ times a year
  • withdraw cash from ATMs overseas
  • shopping (local and overseas)

What I'm planning on getting:

  • AMEX Explorer credit card
  • new travel card (WISE?)
  • unknown visa/mastercard credit card

Which card should I use in these situations?

  • online shopping with currency conversions (e.g., USD to AUD)
  • withdrawing cash overseas
  • small expenses like buying food in australia
  • small expenses like buying food overseas
  • booking hotels in foreign currencies

    For these scenarios,

    • online shopping with currency conversions (e.g., USD to AUD)
    • small expenses like buying food overseas
    • booking hotels in foreign currencies

get a credit card with zero international transaction fees. If you prefer to use money from your account, apply for a debit card with zero international transaction fees. Not sure if Amex ticks this box. Perhaps it does, but please check to confirm.

See this link for credit cards with no international transaction fees - https://www.pointhacks.com.au/credit-cards/no-overseas-trans…

    • withdrawing cash overseas

A debit card with zero international transaction fees. See https://www.finder.com.au/debit-cards-low-foreign-transactio…

    • small expenses like buying food in australia

Either credit or debit card, depends upon your preference and individual situation.

This is not financial advice, only sharing my personal opinion. Please check t&cs before applying.

Fee free debit cards with large international ATM networks with no atm withdrawal fees are great for travelling, such as Citi and HSBC. You can use them for both withdrawing money and for eftpos purchases.

I either don't understand the question or you are overcomplicating things.
If your aim is to collect points, then you should use credit card in as many transactions as you can.
If you are not chasing points, then cc is not needed at all.
Same logic applies with overseas transactions, but should use no fx cc or debit card.

To zoom in a little - some merchants still charge cc transaction fee. In these cases you should know how much your points are worth and decide case by case if it makes sense to use your cc for these points.

Thank you, I believe I was overcomplicating things.
