Why? So you can fake it?

    • What if it is to create scam legitimate business doing smoke detector compliance checks?

      • Thanks for your concern, but ongoing compliance checks in Victoria do not need to be done by a business or a licensed professional. I completed the Smoke Detector check on my investment property during my annual battery change. I am required to confirm that in writing (along with evidence) to my real estate agent. So I am just looking for a template I can use for that :)

        • Does that also apply to gas and electrical checks?

  • Out of curiosity/for argument's sake. Owner provided their own smoke alarm compliance certificate. If there was an issue with the smoke alarms (out of date/alarm issue) and a fire broke out and destroyed the house. Who would be liable?

    • I'm not sure about VIC, but in QLD the legislation only requires lessor/owners to test the alarms within 30 days of a new tenancy, after that it is the tenants responsibility to maintain them. Test, clean and replace batteries when required

However most real-estate agents offer this as a service and do mislead owners into paying for these extras.
