Saw this soundbar in Good Guys commercial for $640. JB commercial has it for 700+ and cheapest in google is 800+. Seems like a good deal. And, good reviews on Google.

thanks. keen to find out more from people who are currently using it!

  • I'm curious too! I am getting close to pulling the trigger on the Samsung q930, but this has a 10" sub, the Samsung's only have 8. Very keen to see/hear/read some reviews.

I have both the Bar 5.1 and Samsung Q990b.

The samsung was bought out of utter frustration at the Bar 5.1. Having said that, the JBL isnt all bad.

The JBL has a better sounding sub (to my untrained ear, it really has a strong low frequency). Thats all the positives out of the way.

The JBL does not play well with my Nvidia Shield (the older version that looks like a sleek modem). If you can get picture (yes it on and off) you will get either no audio or screeching noise from the speakers, completely unusable unless you use optical from the TV.
Had it looked at under warranty on 4 occasions, they admitted there was an issue with the shield but too bad it works in every other case….. Which is true so now it lives in the bedroom for music and the odd netflix/youtube session.

Out of frustration bought the samsung, amazing audio. Slightly weaker sub but for movies its still amazing soundstage overall and out performs the JBL at every level (i dont like a ton on bass in movies). The samsung has wireless rear speakers though are powered off mains so keep that in mind. The JBL has completely wireless which require either plugging back into the sound bar after watching tv or connecting permanently to power via USB.
KEEP IN MIND THEY DO NOT CHARGE AS YOU USE THE SOUND BAR and they are nowhere near as powerful as the samsung. Knowing what I know now I would never have Bought the JBL Sound bar.
Waste of $995 (purchased 10/21) for comparison the Samsung was purchased 2/23 for $1395 ($600 off).

tl;dr JBL only good for boom boom. Samsung better in every single other area thereby making up for slightly weaker sub.

      • Brilliant review. Thank you. No further questions. Case dismissed! Thanks mate.

      • Thanks for your nice review. Just out of curiosity do u have this specific atmos version or an earlier model? Really wanted to buy these no point if its this bad.

        • For what it's worth I grabbed this one yesterday, it looks like the JBL Bar 800 is one of the new refresh models, but not as many speakers as the JBL Bar 9.1.

From using it just briefly so far it seems fairly good, the bass is really loud with the massive subwoofer and the detachable speakers are decent I think as well. Yet to watch anything with Atmos on it yet.

I figured this one would probably be the best I could get for my budget that was about $600, but I'm sure the Samsung's would sound better for double the price 😁

          • @Slothalicious: The Samsung also has 11 channels and 4 height object channels over 5 channels and 2 height object channels. , So different price point

          • @Slothalicious: Can you share your experience with atmos in action movies.

The sub looks identical to the BAR 5.1. Its a great sub and I wish I could pair it to my 990b.
The annoying thing aside from the incompatibility with Shield was in the rear speakers, I see the power interface between bar and speaker is different from the 5.1. Im curious if it still USB type C and if it is possible to charge while using the speakers.

2 things to keep in mind:

The rear speakers actual speaker cone is in the narrow edge, not the flat face. That realization helped a little bit with the rear speakers being too quiet, increasing volume only made them die quicker. I was unable to binge watch Netflix for example, I believe I got 3 or so episodes of Squid Game.

Second I forgot to mention I got a constant popping in the sub every several seconds or so (this is after everything was replaced under warranty for Shield issue). Did some googling, turns out its a wifi thing and changing the wifi channels on my router fixed it….. I dunno but it worked.

The Bar 800 certainly allows for more format support and passthrough, I wouldnt be surprised if the Shield issue is resolved. The tech said it looks like a HDMI sync issue, the 990b being able to handle variable everything from refresh rated to bitrates to resolution seemed like the safer bet for me.

      • Brilliant review.

      • Thanks for the review.
I was thinking of plugging my Google TV chromecast into the eARC HDMI port and then having the TV plugged into the other HDMI port. my PS5 will also be connected to the TV. Do you think this set up will work?
the guy at JB Hifi said i won't get Atmos if i don't go directly into the sound bar..

      • Great review. How long do the jbl surround speakers battery last before requiring recharging? Google hasn’t been my friend today.

  • anyone know how to get a goodguys commercial account?

    • nm worked it out

  • hard to pass this up at $640! been eyeing this soundbar off for a while and the cheapest i found was $860 off ebay
