Hot-desking and portable monitors

Has anyone with hot-desking experience used portable monitors connected to their laptop (because the hot-desk doesn’t have a monitor)?

I mean monitors a bit like this:

So you have to lug your laptop, cords, portable monitor and maybe stand in your bag.

This is something I might start doing if doable. A better option might just be a laptop raiser and external keyboard, but sometimes I like the extra screen space.

Cheers for thoughts.

  • @Clear posted a lot of portable monitors, mostly from aliexpress. just search.

  • Thanks for showing that but just wondering if anyone has used them successfully for hot-desking, recommended types, general experience etc…

    • No reason they wouldn't work for "hot desking".

Why arent the desks set up appropriately for hot desking?

And why on earth is anyone still really doing this?

If my job was doing this to me my first thought would be seek.com.au, not buying my own portable monitor.

Hot desking is ok, no monitors tho, woeful

If your employer can't even provide computer monitors in their office, they should have a full WFH policy.

Expecting people to BYO monitor is nuts.
Forget the monitor and get a better job imo.

    • I should clarify this is in a self-employed or contractor kind of role.
The work doesn't require a monitor, but I prefer one.

Why not ask their IT if they can provision you a monitor.

There shouldn't be any issue as long as you're happy carrying chargers etc.

I've used my iPad and Uperfect X lapdock in the office and working away from home for ~6 weeks. You'll just need a extra charger(or multiport charger), USB-C 3.1 cable (to connect to device) and a charging cable.

  • sidecar isn't too bad if you have good wifi, a mac and an ipad

    • It can also work wired though i am yet to try it. Wireless sidecar is a pain on bad wifi.

  • I bought a zeuslap from one of the many deals. I think they mostly perform and look the same.

My comment is that there are more wires than you expect. The monitor needs usb c power and an hdmi cable as expected but your laptop ports can be either left or right. If your monitor has the ports on the same side as your laptop, it can get clunky to setup when you add a laptop charger on top.

Having said that though, it's not too bad and I appreciate having a quick option to connect to headless devices like NVR, servers etc.

  • I have a 17 inch portable that runs off USB-C and my Thinkpad has 2x USB-C so the other one goes to a dock running 3x 24in monitors at the office.

Works perfectly however the portable monitor is about as heavy as the Thinkpad, maybe even a bit heavier. So consider that if you have to lug it with you every day.
