Visiting Melbourne coming July.
Anyone can recommend good hiking trails? Should be staying at Boxhill or Hawthorn.

Did you actually sign up just to ask about Melbourne? haha

You might have to be more specific about what a "good hiking trail" to you is. That is… specify fitness levels, ages, whether it's overnight, type of transport to and from, etc,

Just signed up but not just on Melbourne.

Im looking for trail which is near to Boxhill or Hawthorn since Im not driving. Any trail is fine. Just like to walk off the stress. Havent had a break since shitty covid first started.

        good hiking trails?

You do realise that Hawthorn and Box Hill are classic suburbia so hiking walking trails will be shared bike paths.

Hawthorn will be prettier as it's near the Yarra.

        • Hawthorn will be prettier as it's near the Yarra.

Box Hill is closer to the Yarra Valley and the Dandenongs.

          • @jv: By a whole 10 minutes….

              Then so is the Yarra.

  • Keep your eyes on the path. Melbournians don't pick up their dog (profanity).

  • Back of Glenferrie along the old railway line to Mont Abert.
    Eastlink off peak.

Use Metro to reach Belgrave. Last stop on the same train line that goes to Hawthorn or Box Hill. There are heaps of treks ranging from 5 km to 20+ kms starting from Belgrave. Or get off at upper ferntree gully(same line) and do 1000 steps and there are heaps of treks starting from there as well. I remember there is maps booklet available at these stations that can help you choose the trek.

      and catch the Puffing Billy…

    • This.

And holy moley, JV with a constructive and true comment!!!

    • Love this idea and it's practical. I know there's the train to Woodend but not sure how close it is to Macedon lookouts but nice area during foggy wintery weather.

Otherwise just Google parks and reserves around your area.

      • To get to Macedon you definitely need car, there's a train station in town but the mountain is another 15 min drive

  • If you're visiting Melbourne, you can do what we did. How could I forget that day? Yeah, how we walked along the Yarra, to the MCG, and then on to the tennis centre. Through the Bourke Street Mall, and down the Block Arcade. Caught the 96 tram to St Kilda Esplanade, saw the Westgate Bridge from the top of Flinders Street clocks, saw the You Yangs real clear, from the foot of Mt Dandenong!

So we went along, to the Victorian Tourist Bureau, got heaps of ideas for places we'd never even been to - like Sovereign Hill and Healesville Sanctuary! The Brighton Sea Baths and some kiosk at the end of a pier. We went down to a place, I think it was Captain Cook's cabin (we're not all that sure, but at least it rhymes with Moorabbin).

    • Seems like you have a blast in Melbourne.

How did you get to the top of Flinders Street clocks?

I'm not a huge cricket/AFL fan but the MCG tour is well worth doing.

  • it will be cold

      They can just hike quicker…

      • It is easier to rug up and walk in Winter than deal with the heat of Summer.

  • If you are over the weight limits on your flights, don't attempt to try supposedly popular "baggage hacks" like this one:

Other than that, hope you have a wonderful time in Melbourne. Also, don't forget to go see these attractions, like the FIFA Women's World Cup Fan Festival starting from 20 July, if you are interested:

I got a jetstar flight on Sunday, and the girl in front of me put her bag on the scales. 18KG! I was like… wtf. She hadn't paid for extra. Got done $130.

Jetstar is stingy yes… but that is just wild to think you could just walk through with that.

    • Why assume they are flying?

Trains/buses/cars are modes of transportation between cities.

      • They're not driving and though i don't have stats, I'd expect a much higher rate of plane travel than bus service to Melbourne.
You don't think it's a likely assumption in this instance? And does this assumption impact the quality of the advice given? Relevance, yes, but that's it.

Thanks guys for the tips. Yet to book my air tickets. Probably flying Scoot since I not planning to bring any check in luggage.

    • Are you planning to wear all jackets on body and pretend you are an overweigh person? Not sure about Scott, but Jetstar just fined someone over this hack. Mind you it is very cold in July.

Yup. Understand it is cold in July. Scoot allows 2 hand carry of 10kg. It should be enough since I dunn usually buy alot of stuffs when Im travelling.
