Suggestions on Spare HDD's

Currently have 2 X WD Red 8TB hdd's, they were originally in my DS918+ nas drive which I upgraded to 16TB drives. Then I chucked them into my pc as spare backup drives but recently I've also upgraded my pc into a smaller form factor so no room for hdd's.

Still wanting to use them as backup drives, so I looked into hard drive enclosures. However reading online the general consensus is that multi-bay hard drive enclosures with USB is bad idea, often overheating or disconnecting leading to corrupt drives.

Any suggestions on what is the best solution? Should I just get another 2 bay Nas? But that seems like a waste as I only want them as simple back up drives. Or is there a reliable enclosure that can be suggested?

  • You can gift me the disks :)

I have an external dock for hdds. It's 12v power is split to a dual USB splitter, one of which supplies a rattly bunnings fan which cools the disks. Without the fans, the shucked 10tb disk would sometimes overheat and drop out

It's a dual dock. so i can literally put the disk in, power it on, and my nas backsup, and then i power it off till next time

    • I guess that could be an option. Was hoping for an option that I could just leave the drives in and powered on as i would probably be transferring files to it often.

      • but you called it a backup drive. So, why is it often that it's used?

        • so that he can schedule backups

          • @knk: I'm guessing a reasonable person backsup their computer to the nas, and maybe once weekly the nas spits it out to a backup disk of the NAS. that's what i would do. .in fact, that's what i do do. Except, i dont backup my computer. All small files on onedrive, mirrored to the nas.

        • Cus I have an issue and I like to organise things all the time…. Haha

  • Just get enclosures that are a half decent brand.

Also make sure they have a switch that can be left "on" incase the power goes out. Not the type that you need to push the button on everytime they get power.

    • Any particular brand u would suggest?

      • Not too sure honestly, just look up some reviews. To be honest as long as airflow is okay don't see if being an issue.

Worst case you lower the lifetime of the drive a little.

        • Could be an option as well, I'll look into it, thanks!

ergh i hate momentary power switches. With the classic on/off stay toggles, i can control the enclosure with a smart switch. i like smart switches

Transfer the data to the disks, and use them as cold storage. You do not need to constantly have them on when the computer is on.

vantec is the biggest name in external enclosures but i think they left the australian market. Prices went through the roof here.

    I got this enclosure, https://www.mwave.com.au/product/startech-usb-31-10gbps-encl…
but it died after 3 months.

So then i just got a synology ds220+ which has been great.
