Telstra Smart Modem Gen 2 100Mbps to TP-Link Archer C64

So got my FTTP installed today and all working fine.

Getting download speeds of 600-800 on Wifi and desktop PC that is directly connected to the Telstra Smart Mode.

I have Ethernet ports in all my kids bedrooms and they have Archer C64 Routers connected to the Telstra smart modem.

Before I used the Gen 2 Smart modem I had a Gen 1 telstra modem and was seeing 1000Mbps connection when looking in the setup page.

Now with the Gen 2 modem I am only seeing 100Mbps connection between the modems. I haven't changed any of the cabling, I cannot change this setting in the Tp link router.

I'm thinking it is something very simple I am missing, but I cannot figure it out. Anyone out there can point me in the right direction?

I've googled it and tried these things:

different cables
the ethernet port on the PC is at 1Gbps

I don't really want to plug in the old modem again and see, as I've just cleaned everything up cable wise and desk wise, but will do it if I any advice given doesn't work also

Update:

So I connected the new modem into the older telstra modem I had and that link speed was 1000

What im assuming now is; when the nbn guy was in my room fiddling around connecting the nbn; he’s stuffed up the Ethernet cable running through my walls to the other rooms; is that possible ?

  • …. I had a hell of a time trying to make head or tails of that (and I read it three times).

e.g. Now with the Gen 2 modem I am only seeing 100Mbps connection between the modems. I haven't changed any of the cabling, I cannot change this setting in the Tp link router. - You should only have one modem, and one router. These might even be the same box. You shouldn't have 2 modems.

I think this is the situation where the "draw an MS Paint diagram" would be useful.

So here are some semi-random comments that might be relevant, or not.

    1. Do not do any testing over wifi. Only test wired connections.
    2. If you are semi-technically capable, you can test your internal network speeds using iperf3, this will allow you to test the max throughput of each physical LAN port on your modem, and not have to rely on whatever internet speed test site you are going to
    3. If you have 100Mbps limits, this is usually down to old 100Mbps on the router (the C64 has gig ports though) or bad cabling. Suggest that you use known good new cabling to test, if you have not already done that.
  • Sorry; I was in a rush typing before I went to pickup the kids from school so I would hopefully get a reply by the time I got home

I’m going to plug in the c64 directly into the modem not through the Ethernet ports in the bedroom and see if the link speed is 100 or 1000

I’m not testing speeds via wifi. I’m checking the telstra modem settings page where it says the link speed

When I connected the old modem directly into it; it showed a link speed of 1000; so I’m assuming the nbn guy has maybe bent or twisted the cabling running through the walls when he was installing the fibre optic cable

  • Seems as though my suspicion was correct. When plugging the c64 directly into the modem with the same cable I’m getting 1000Mbps link speed.

The nbn tech was quite rough when he was pilling out the wall plate and the cabling from my Ethernet setup :/

Might have to call out the guys who installed the Ethernet cables throughout my house to check it out / re-do them

    • Yeah, even just a single disconnection to one of the 4 pairs on the keystone could take the speed down to 100mbps.
Weird that it's occurred in multiple rooms though.

      • I’ve tested the other rooms. It’s just the one. I put the c64 in another room and it was running at 1000

the other archer in my other kids room is a c24; which only can run at 100

        • So stupid question maybe, but why not just swap the routers around?
Put the C24 into the room with the gimped connection?

          • @ESEMCE: I’ve bought a new Router for that room; so will need the room with the bung cabling to be fixed regardless.
