Autobarn and Its Dodgy Price Match Policy

Tried to get a Sony XAV-AX6000 head unit price matched for $699 yesterday. Called a few stores and every store gave me a different answer….

  • Can only match Victorian stores.
  • One store said can do $727
  • Another said can price match but they declined it today when I went in store.

Overall a very frustrating experience.

Do you have any Autobarn price match horror stories?

Why not just buy it from the $699 store if they're being difficult?

    • Will have to do that.

  • Who's doing it for $699?

    • Car audio excellence was up until yesterday.

I know. Hopefully, that price will come back again.

@RSmith: Take the $727 before they realise. I've spent many a time waiting for specials like this to return, but it never eventuates.

For future reference, you could also try asking Sony to price-match

I find price-matching/beating at any store is dependent on the employee you're asking (regardless of their policies).

Agree… tried matching on a headset once, the manager said no, as the other store that had it cheap was too close by…. WTF?

so I went down the road and bought it

Til auto barn even HAS a price match policy to be fair I don’t think I’ve gone into an auto barn since I was 15. More of a super cheap type of operator.

SCA gives me 10% off, but don't go their much these days, due to having a Novated Lease Car. It comes up for renewal in October, however hopefully I am way ahead in my payments despite that FW Putin, so the ballon figure will be Sweet FA.

Does the credit come out of the residual? My NVL company sends it back through payroll and you get taxed on it, residual is fixed. I need to make sure I use up all my credit!

        • This is how it typically works.

You know there’s no requirement for any store to offer price match/beat? Reward the store with the lowest price by buying from them. Unless it’s Harvey Norman.

    • If a shop has a price match/beat policy, I always go in store, if convenient (closer to home/work).

I went to autobarn by mistake so asked them to price match SCA on oil. They couldn’t match, just a small discount no where near the price. Wasn’t sure what their policy was

  • Sounds like they're pretty bad

If it’s only a price match, then just buy it at the store that has the best price.

  • Yep their price match policy sucks. I live in a large regional town and they would only price match with stores you can walk into.
The other stores have stock thats ten years old sitting on their shelves.

Wouldnt even price match including postage. Its not like they are taking a loss on something worth a few hundred dollars that someone can sell (and make money) with an additional $20 shipping. Their 20% off sale didnt make a difference to how competitive their prices are (they suck), they were willing to order in stock - but only at their prices. I try to do business with local stores, but not when two sets of speakers worth about $250 (incl delivery) are going to cost me $350 at their discounted price.

  • Went to the store which had said $727 earlier. Today was some different staff, they sold it to me for $700. Yay!!!

  • Price matching is such as a sport, no matter what store I try to price match, it's always different answers and this can come down to
    - T&Cs of the price match
    - Managers and branches educating front line X Y Z

The only time I price matched sucessfully was a mixer from Big W, JB was selling it for $159 but out of stock and BigW had it in stock for $199 and the rep asked her boss and he said yes. But I think I got very lucky cause a few forums stated Big W doesn't price match and alot of people got rejected, it was on their website they do but it looks like they have taken it down(?)

If I was a price match person, I would only price match for out of stock items or price beat or the store has better warranty or returns process. Other than that,I just buy it from the place that's the cheapest

  • I find price match is too much of a hit and miss on various stores. It is less stressful to just buy from the place who offered the cheaper price to begin with unless I am chasing a better store policy on returns, warranty or the like.
