Washi Origami- Set Of 30 Designs, 360 sheets $9.69
Showa Grim Origami New Color Chiyo Paper for Chiba Crane, 15 Designs, 1005 sheets $9.73

Now that we have access to Amazon JP, we can get Japanese origami paper cheap(er). I had a quick look online at which paper is supposed to be good and these ones/brands came up. I'm a little out of my depth here but I do believe these are good prices. Outside of Amazon JP these particular packs are a lot more expensive. Can someone who knows a bit more about origami paper confirm if these ones are good and if the prices are good?

JapanBargain S-3611 Japanese Color Creative Origami Paper 6-inch 500 Sheets $12.05
This one I found later. I don't think the quality would be as good as the other brands but for the price I'll try it.

Edit: To everyone who can't see it, the price is there, but Amazon JP links are very weird. Refreshing or searching for the item sometimes helps bring up the price. I'm sorry but I don't know of a reliable way to bring up the price.

Maybe the easiest way is to search for "Toyo Thousand Paper Cranes Origami 7cm 50 Colors 1000 Sheets". The first hit will show:

None of the prices mentioned in the post are available when you click the links.

You'll probably have to refresh. It's just one of those Amazon JP things I think.

7cm is quite small - like a sticky note. After folding the model would be tiny. Is this a common size for oragami?

    • I think these are traditionally for cranes. You can probably do other simple things but yeah these are a bit small. I tried looking for larger sizes but the prices weren't as good. If you can find good prices for larger paper, please let us know.

I have a box of the second link Showa Grim Origami New Color Chiyo Paper for Chiba Crane, 15 Designs, 1005 sheets $9.73. Pretty sure I got it from Japan 20+ years ago, if not Kinokunia over 10years ago. Paper is still in good condition.

Each sheet is about the size of a sticky note. It is very thin and may not suit for many models. However, it is great for paper cranes (1000 senbazuru). You can even fold some steps with multiple sheets to save time :)

The design is a 2 tone colour (white + variant) and nice symmetrical pattern. Flipped side of sheet is plain white - but because it is thin, is at times transparent.

Generally speaking, typical origami paper for most models I would say is 15cm/6inch. Most thickness would perhaps be 80gsm like regular copy paper, whereas this one is maybe <50gsm.

Not sure about the other links though… That washi paper one looked nice, but folding washi paper I find is not as 'forgiving' so you probably want to practise on other paper first. Honestly I found some pretty nice square paper with designs at Kmart every now and then which was in the 6-8inch range.

Sorry, I just had a closer look at the first link… I had that paper in the past and it is quite nice. Good to fold and fairly thick because of the washi feel. But not too thick so it is hard to fold. I'd say it's like a 100-120gsm I guess. Patterns are beautiful. The size may be an issue as per above, so models can get small and finicky. Would even suit scrapbooking? Personally, 300+ sheets of these are better value than 1000 sheets of link 2, unless you were specifically doing something high volume like the senbazuru.

I basically got a pack of the Toyo Thousand Paper Cranes to practice and muck around with. The Washi paper one would be for later. I did want to get larger paper but the prices just weren't as good. I think just folding stuff would be quite relaxing. Could do with a bit of relaxation in my life. Don't need to do anything complex, just paper cranes will probably do.

It became my 'knitting'. Helped me sleep, kept me company on train commutes, and made me patient when others were late for meetings. Also left most finished ones in random places and Id like to think they were a nice surprise rather than litter. You can also stick them on cards/presents as little embellishments. Now phones are rotting my brain and fingers through busyness - another sign to get back on the origami train… Wishing you good luck with it 😎

          • @Carydadon: Sounds great, exactly what I was after. My wife took up colouring and says it helped her. I'm hoping this will be good for me.

      • wow the expanse of knowledge for niche hobbies like these on ozbargain never fails to amaze me.

I've memorized the most traditional and common way to fold a crane and enjoyed it as a kid, but what do people do once they fold their 1000 cranes from one of these packs?

edit: that said, i remember roaming around a melbourne shopping strip (think Fitzroy) once and there was a nice little store that sold only origami paper. Maybe it's not as uncommon as I think.

I had to click 'other buying options' and choose amazon japan

And can't remember which is which but they're 3cm or 7cm or 15cm. So just check what you'r ordering or you might get mini sized

  • Sorry about 400 of the deal click links were me. Haven't been able to get it to work with or without the app, tried refreshing, signing out, deleting, reinstalling app, switching from wifi to cellular, holding device upside down, one leg in the air. Nada. Sad face.

    • Can you try on something outside of the app? When I tried to do the searching method I wrote about above it does come up eventually and is probably less painful than what you did.

      • +1

About 100 attempts without the app on my Android tablet.
But finally got it to work in Safari on an iPhone. (didn't work for me with iPhone app either)

    Unobtainable for the mentioned price!

    • +1

Did you try searching for it like I said in the post? It should come up eventually.

    Works. Thanks OP!

  • Thanks OP got 2

  • Doesn't work on desktop (Chrome), but it worked on mobile iOS app. Thanks.

  • Bought one of each to try, thanks!

  • Good find OP!

I remember buying these sets a long time ago and pretty sure it wasn't that cheap.

Had to go into the Amazon app and manually search for it in order to get it at that price. Didn't work clicking on the links.

  • Great activity to do while enjoying youfoodz

when you open the links on webpage look down the right side for other purchase options and you will see the cheaper pricing there. If you open in Amazon app look for "other sellers on amazon" you will see the cheaper options then. Amazon will often have the same listing from other sellers and other countries listed in this way. Sometimes the price is more expensive with some vendors with local stock and cheaper with ones with overseas stock, this may also mean longer shipping times.

  • Bonzai my Nippon cousins!

Had to do my own search several times and eventually got the right priced ones from Amazon JP.

    • The search way seems to be the best way for me. I found you don't even have to refresh the page. Just keep spamming the "X New Offers" and it'll eventually pop up. I'd change the post but I can't without a Mod.

    • Just purchased and this link works!

  • The Toyo shows $21 and the Washi $26 for me.

Best deal I found was this 500x15cm sheets one for $17.70 (which Amazon says it's discounted 23%, but C³ says it's at the max, and was $1 cheaper a year ago).

    • yeah, the links are weird.. even the second time I went to the link after I bought it, the price went up.

But now that I am on a new computer, the link by xngbac works and shows the 9.43..

Maybe try a new browser or device..

    • I can still get the prices. Something is very strange with the Amazon JP items. Did you try the searching thing? I made a dodgy video trying to buy something else. It shows an error when adding to the cart but I think it was OOS for that item.

      • Ha! The Washi one shows $9.70 under search results, but when you click on it, it turns to $26.70!

        • You need to keep clicking/spamming that link. It should eventually show the right price.

Edit: I just tried it and got the right price, and could add to my cart.

      • Not what I was expecting in your dodgy video buying something else

        • +1

I'm not going anywhere near that topic. Nothing against it though.

  • If you fold 1k paper cranes, you earn a wish. xx
