Laptop under $800

Hi all. I've started an apprenticeship and just received $800 from the gov't as a "tool allowance". I need a laptop to do my assignments on and was wondering is it worthwhile paying more getting an i7 processor or just stick to an i5. I know that the i7 won't be as outdated as quickly as the i5 but it also costs a fair bit more. Will I notice a massive difference in speeds etc from the i5 to i7? I won't be doing anything like video editing, just using Word, Excel etc and probably some net browsing. Is the i7 difference in price worth it in comparison to the i5? And where would be the best place to get the best price? Thanks for your help in advance.

  • You don't need an i7. i7 is mainly for those who play CPU intensive games and run synthetic apps (e.g 3D graphic design, CAD engineering, simulations and whatnot)

Microsoft Office will run fine on just about any CPU. For your needs, a Core i3 would already do the job fine.

    Try searching on Ozbargain: http://www.ozbargain.com.au/tag/laptop

If you are considering on travelling with the laptop and taking it to your workplace everyday, consider getting something that is in the 14" or smaller size range.

  • www.graysonline.com.au sells reconditioned laptops (often with only minor scratches) by auction. I picked up an i7, 8GB, 750GB HDD, ATI Radeon 7000 series HP laptop for just under $700 delivered. Great condition. Sexy little laptop. Have a look about!
