Belong Data Sim for Travelling

Hey Guys,

Setting up one of these for the olds to pop into a 4g router while they're in their caravan travelling around country.
Is there any added benefit to setting these up as a data sim as opposed to calls plus data?

My understanding is that when opting for data plan only that the unused data will expire end of month while mobile plan will carry over, the mobile option while having less data is cheaper month to month and you can buy data cheap through ebay, classified etc.

Thoughts?

I wouldn't use Telstra MVNOs whilst travel around country, outside urban areas their reception is not very great.

I say best to get Telstra full network sims.

    • Huh? I thought Telstra was all just one network? DO they have different mobile networks?

Telstra was all just one network?

Telstra is, but not Belong. They only use part of the Telstra network.

Only Telstra and Boost use the full Telstra network.

        • OK thanks for that. There is a possibility I'll need a data sim so that's good to know.

    • this. telstra has best coverage for out in the bush where voda and optus don't.

but your question is not about coverage. added benefits is as you mentioned the data rollover for mobile plan as compared to data only plan.
so it would depend on data usage. unless you need more data than the data only plan gives there is no benefits going to a more expensive mobile plan.

Correct. You could get around that by gifting the unused data to a friend or family member with a Belong mobile (not data) service just before the end of the billing cycle, and have them gift it back to you at the start of the next billing cycle. EDIT: Thinking about it some more, gifting data between two Belong data services should also work, as long as there's a sufficient gap between the two billing dates.

    Which plans are you comparing?

But as @OMGJL warns, is Telstra Wholesale coverage going to be enough? For a quick visual comparison, go to https://www.whistleout.com.au/MobilePhones/Guides/Telstra-mo… and scroll down to the second map. Slide the vertical line left and right.

If your parents are savvy enough to be able to activate and physically swap SIM cards as required, I'd suggest loading them up with a bunch of discounted Boost starter packs. If not, then perhaps one of the Boost 12 month options.

    Go with Starlink Roam…

  • depends on the length of travel, you might be able to utilise a few Boost cashback deals.
