Damaged Phone - Covered by Travel Insurance?

Hi OzBargain, I need help.

So I'm currently out on holiday. Now I've damaged my phone (LCD no longer works properly, it's flickering and my screen has been cracked a little). I'm not sure when exactly it happened, however I'm sure it may have been the slip / fall I had from while hiking which resulted in a scratched leg nothing serious. My phone however in my pocket may have hit something I'm unsure because the incident wasn't anything big (felt like a bump really at best)

I have travel insurance and I am wondering would this be claimable? I've read the PDS multiple times and there doesn't seem to be exclusions however I might be reading it incorrectly :(

Could someone with experience help me? Would this is an unforeseen incident?

My insurance is with AHM travel.
.
Cheers!

Call or email your insurance and ask.
Only you know which particular pds covers you.

    • Good idea - I've already emailed them - don't think I can do call since I am not on roaming.

  • If it just stops working then it might not be covered as it could be pre existing damage or hardware/software fault.

Looking at the standard PDS on their website:-

    • Damage is covered for luggage and personal effects
    • Mobile phones have a max limit of $1,000 unless you specifically increased it
    • Depreciation factors into play so it's worth less the older it is
    • You are still liable to pay an excess ($100?)

Contact them to understand your cover and options. They say they have assistance people available 24/7.

FYI you were not "hiking", you were "trekking" (Page 7).

    Standard policy: https://policy.travelinsurancepartners.com.au/partners/ahm/f…

I think $250 is my excess. And good spot for hiking / trekking. Thanks!

I think the standard policy is similar to what I got emailed. I'll have a read however I can't seem any exclusions.. I might have to read it again.

  • Just claim it.
If its not covered ahm will explain why.

What if it were stolen from your bag while at a cafe?

    • Need a police report.. Also that might be fraud hahaha!

    • Fraud

The insurance company will ask for the police report you needed to file and then reject your claim outright and blacklist you for any future policies

    • They would say your bag was unattended if your weren't watching it. If you were watching it, your phone can't possibly be stolen.

  • I had complementary travel insurance from my CC and claimed my FUBAR'd phone as I slipped on some ice and used it to break my fall.

You will likely have to take it to a repair shop and fork out $45ish for the assessment but you should be able to claim that cost also.

    • What does the assessment do?

Is it to show that your damage is consist with the fall or is it more so the insurance company knows its damaged and requires a full replacement?

      • Yeah so they know it's a legit claim.
