Portable Apple Airplay Unit for Older Hyundai - Suggestions?

Hi. Have older car - Hyundai with known issues Re faults in the unit for maps/reverse camera/Bluetooth. Ie. No Bluetooth, no updated maps, faulty camera, and was quoted $1200 to replace the system.

I learned that there are “portable” devices that will give the AirPlay/Bluetooth via cigarette lighter port and plug into the AUx Point.

Wondering if anyone here used one and if they’d recommend one.

I saw when Googled that some offer a front dashcam / remote control able to be strapped on steering wheel.

Dashcam would be very useful.

Appreciate input.
Thanks. Cc

Buy portable, you’ll likely want a better solution very soon. Get a proper head unit fitted, surely one can be sourced for cheaper than $1200.

What Hyundai? Need to know what sort of head unit would

You can buy an Atoto F7 from Amazon for $250 and get it fitted for about the same if you can't do it yourself.

    • Are these units from Africa?

      • Chinese made, but very decent units without paying a premium for name-brand - very highly rated and well reviewed.

      • You are confusing this with the African made Desmond Tutu

      • Where it never rains?

  • You could look at a cheaper headunit or consider installing yourself. I asked here about recommendations for a Android Auto/car play headunit - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/774354. I had a look in store. I'm leaning towards a sony unit as I felt the UI was more responsive and the pioneer one is released a few years back.

IIRC, you'd be looking at about 150-200 for install and 150-200 depending on car for harnesses too hook everything up.

The AliExpress option and Teyes look ok, if you're comfortable with them.

I have your exact use case. Dead Bluetooth. Aux cable and rubbish old car.

Carpuride is your friend here. Connects wirelessly to your phone and auto launches CarPlay. Plenty fast enough. Works super well.

I wouldn’t go messing around with proper head unit installs. Chances are the location won’t be optimal.

Why do you say that? Most cars have a standard sized slot for a head unit and it’s within east reach of the driver. Some cars will need a trim piece to surround the head unit and match the dash.

    • Oh thanks heaps for recommending and link. Which model did you get ?

      • I bought the 7 inch version for my polo.
And the W103 for my wife’s car.

Both connect perfectly every time. Guessing. They’re all pretty similar in usability, just different form factors.

        • @mooney thanks for that. There’s a couple of 7” ones. Trying to figure out which best. Plug and play or wireless.
Thinking maybe using car stereo with the plug in might be best.

Another vote for Carpuride. I stuck one in my little Fiesta, it worked great. I hard wired it in.

    • Thank you ! Which model did you get?

Depending on how cheap is cheap, if you get a new head unit you will more than likely need a new fascia, an aerial connector if you want to keep AM/FM. Possibly $500+ for new head unit, facsia and wiring, plus $1-200 to install if you need someone to do it.
I have a Kia with bluetooth but no Carplay so I bought this seperate unit (not portable as it doesn't have a battery) and I mounted it into the CD slot with this mount so it covers the original radio unit, YMMV.

    • Thank you. Will investigate- cheap option. How is the reverse camera? How does it connect?( Can’t find that info )

      • I didn't get the reverse camera, but it'll be powered by the reverse light circuit (you'll have to do some wire searching/soldering).

  • I got the one on supercheap

Has wireless CarPlay and android auto with both front and rear dashcam. Awesome addition to my car, love it.

    • Thanks. Could only find head units - wanted portable - plug into cigarette lighter /wireless.
If that’s what you have could you send link? Ma y thanks

      • This one here. Little more pricey but does come with the dashcam. https://www.supercheapauto.com.au/p/nanocam--nanocam-connect…

Using fm transmitter for car speakers (podcast and Waze).
Absolutely delighted. Have ordered SD card for the dashcam .

Many thanks for the link and information. Was on sale at $250 so very happy with price considering how much is included.

          Love Ozbargain community.

@Msfrugal: Oh wow, now I’m bummed you got it cheaper haha. It’s an awesome little bit of kit, enjoy it!
            Thanks for keeping me updated.

  • I got a 7inch portable one for my Falcon from Temu. It’s been a month and it’s going strong.

    You can consider that.

  • Thanks . I got the one from Supercheap auto - see above 👆
Does the Temu one have the front/rear dashcam and reverse camera
I’ve only received SIM card yesterday- bought from deal GOODGUYS 31 May and they still hadn’t advise when restock so cancelled and bought one in their deal last week.
Hopefully I can give feedback on the reverse camera soon!
Otherwise love the unit I have.

    • Hi mate, how did this go ? Thanks

      • Brilliant!
        Love it.
        Love dashcam front and rear.
Easy to set up. Takes about a minute to connect every time start car - benefit is that if it hasn’t connected to your ph after a minute you’ve left your ph behind which was a bonus .

        • That's cool. How much did you buy it for ? It currently is at $350, a bit steep. Thanks

  • Yes, as I mentioned I was lucky and got it for $250. I saw in todays email that Supercheap have a CASHREWARDS 12% Cashback offer if buy today. That’s $42 saving - brings it to $308 which isn’t bad considering it’s got both dash cams and reversing view if you connect it up.
Not connected Reverse (yet) as my car has that but it’s dodgy in summer due heat so will probably do this summer.
