the evo plus is $55, i don't think there's much difference between evo plus and pro plus in real life performance

PRO PLUS : Read Up to 160 MB/s Write Up to 120 MB/s

EVO PLUS: Transfer Speed up to 130 MB/s

    • +1

Same card class and ratings, I reckon you're right.

Both are Class 3/V30 A2's, real world there wouldn't be much difference at all. They always use "up to" as a marketing gimmick… but it's the minimum ratings that count the most, and both these cards have the same minimum ratings. Same warranty as well. RRP is way over inflated and this price is much closer to what it's actually worth.

      • +3

Some of those speeds are probably only accessible if one is using their readers so I think its probably ok just to buy EVO Plus.

        • Both well priced though! (still worth the +) :)

      • The major difference is when you are transferring large files or the whole contents of a card, which is something that content makers will notice. Having said that, the write speeds appear to be the same on both these cards.

      • isn't there a difference when using it in something like steam deck etc?

        • +1

          Nup.

No way a steam deck is running 4K level bandwidth, and even then it has much faster DDR5 internal memory to handle CPU/GPU tasking.
It's just a storage drive, so no way you'd need anything this fast. But for $55-70 you can't do much better for 512Gb in a big brand card.

          • @UFO: i meant for loading/launching games or emulation games from the microsd.

            • @pinkybrain: Steam Deck SD port is limited to UHS1 (max 100Mb/s). That's more than enough for its anticipated data transfer needs. Deck does 1.6Tflops max GPU. PS5 10Tflops, Xbox 12Tflops… so jack all bandwidth requirements in comparison, and won't even max out the UHS1 given to it.

Both these cards are rated higher than that (min 120Mb/s). So yes… ANY SDXC card with V30/A2 on it will be more than fine.

              • @UFO: that is interesting..

guess the main benefit is if you use their USB readers to copy over the games/roms to the microsd on your PC to get the max speed on the pro plus cards

not sure what the write speed of the evo plus is vs the pro plus

              • @UFO: Thanks for all the info. Bought the EVO 512GB after that, to add it to a Firestick.

    • Are there any differences in longevity between these two?
      Thanks in advance

      • +6

Yes. The white Evo card uses 3D v6 136L NAND, this NAND is infamous for 0E data corruption issue in late batch Samsung SSDs.

The Pro Plus uses 3D V5 92L NAND, this one has no widespread 0E issue to date. I'd say the small difference of money well spend for perceived data safety, and also for peace of mind

        • +1

which year are the bad batches? u got me worried!

          • +2

@kenneth88: Affected SSDs are Early 21 - Late 22, 980 Pro, 970 EP, 870 Evo, their OEM versions and possibly 990 Pro. 'Samsung 0E' will give you more info from multiple sources

For me, SSD data corruption issue can be mitigated by having back ups. For MicroSD it is much more important to get 'safe' models, considering there's no back up for dashcam, Drones etc.

        • Thanks so much mate for this extra info!!

    • I just bought the $55 Evo today, will work for my needs

  • +2

    Thanks OP bought one

  • +2

    Sub 100 1tb waiting room

    • +4

$107 at the moment. Mid year sales surely will be $90 something.

  • Interesting, have ROG Ally on pre-order…. would this be a good option for that?

I wasn't planning on getting an SD card yet, was just gonna see how the onboard 512gb goes first

    • +1

ROG Ally apparently has UHS2 SD port. You'd be losing available transfer bandwidth by going with a card that's lower. I think UHS2 is more than double (or nearly triple) UHS1… so go for a card that has a SDXC2 V90 stamp on it (if you can afford it, not cheap though!) I seriously doubt it'll max out UHS2 and I reckon you'd be more than fine with OP's card, but if you really want the best possible and money is no object, go for it.

      • Thanks, i have never researched microSD.

As i am in no rush, I would def go for something that takes full advantage.

  • +2

    Error on title, it's UHS-1 not 3

  • +1

Small correction in the title OP - should be UHS-1 and not 3. UHS of cards is depicted as a Roman numeral on the card itself.

  • This is a really good price for a 512 pro plus microsd

  • +2

Would these cards be ok to use in dashcams or is it really worth paying more for the Peo Endurance versions? Are there any cheaper alternatives to the Samsung Pro Endurance range that people have used in dashcams without corrupting?

    • +3

Pro Endurance gives you higher temperature tolerances and higher rewrite count… both very important when using dashcams.

But for the price you sometimes pay for Endurance models, you could get 2 or 3 (or even 4) cheaper cards…. and budget for 'less reliability'.

The Pro Endurance models don't give you a 100% guarantee they'll last longer in a hot car over summer, but they probably will.

Just depends on what you want and are prepared to pay for. If you want less likelihood of a card stuffing up, pay for the better one.
If you can handle a card stuffing up and just changing it over when you need to so you can save some coin, go cheaper.

Otherwise go a smaller capacity endurance card and understand you'll be rewriting on it more frequently. You don't need huge capacity for dashcams.
I have 4k on front, 1080p rear, and unit has been functioning just fine for a few years with a standard Sandisk. If it dies, I'll swap it for another cheaper one. I don't keep my footage and only have it in an incident. If that happens card will come straight out and put in a safe place anyway.

      • Thanks for the detailed reply! You've helped me decide to just get a regular type.

Second question, is this card in the deal overkill or should I wait for some cheap sandisk deals?

Edit: evo plus for $55 seems like a decent price. Might just get that. Thanks!

        • +1

I don't think so. 512Gb is a nice big card that should serve you well. At the end of the day we are talking less than $70 delivered. So even if it does die in the middle of summer, its not a huge loss. A lot of people get hung up on $5 here $10 there. It's $70 mate. If you need a card, get this one.

  • Any cashback on this? Couldn't find any…
