Which car? 2020 BMW X3 or 2022 Hybrid Santa Fe Highlander

If you were going to buy a car, which one would you buy?

2020 BMX X3 20d (diesel) AWD M series with 19,000 kms on the clock versus new or very low kms 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander AWD Hybrid.

Residual value after 3 - 5 years?
Fuel economy is about the same, the Santa Fe marginally better.
Love the drive of the BMW, but is the badge worth it?
Servicing costs?
Reliability?
Safety?

Doing about 15,000kms a year, some long highway driving and the rest city.
Boot space is important - the Santa Fe wins here but the BMW is also OK (and more than a Hybrid RAV 4 and has a 'flat' boot cabin which is appealing).

Currently in 2014 Toyota Kluger GX (basic model).

Thanks!

    Keep the Kluger
    Otherwise the Santafe

You dont want a diesel in the city.

    Definitely get the BMW.

Automotive sub forum has been a bit quiet lately and we need more content.

If you can't afford a new BMW you definitely can't afford a second hand one.

    • This is true! Can't afford a new one. Maybe this is good advice…

Don't get a Euro out of warranty. If you can't afford it with at least 2 years remaining on warranty then don't buy one at all.

Why not just keep the Kluger?

Do you have a budget in mind?

    • I have a car allowance for work. Accountant has been telling me to turn my car over as it's 10 years old from a depreciation perspective.
Nothing wrong with the Kluger, but it would be nice to have a few more comforts as I drive quite a bit. It's a strong, sturdy car but can sometimes be a bit painful to park in carparks due to its size and trying to squeeze it in. Budget around $65K. There is 1 year left of warranty on the BMW, but I am concerned about ending up with a lemon…
Other option - stay with the Kluger for another 3 years and then go electric?

You can sometimes purchase extended new car warranty. This is different to additional dealer warranty. It covers you for the same things new car warranty covers you but for longer, without a dealer lock in. Usually companies such as Allianz sell this product.

        • Thanks for the tip!

It covers you for the same things new car warranty covers you

I don't believe this is true but I'm wrong on a semi regular basis.

          • @Muzeeb: as long as it's extended new car warranty and you read the pds to confirm as such. then you should be fine

Is the Santa Fe really any smaller than the kluger?

      • If you were just going to churn in 3 years I'd wait personally. Would you consider going electric now? Some decent offerings in that price range.

      • If you stretch a bit more can get a brand new Tesla Model Y.

Ticks A LOT of boxes, especially as you drive quite a bit.

  • so you want a base model bmw x3 or a upper-spec Highlander.

i can literally tell you the answer, but id like to see what you buy

    • Come on, tell me your thoughts!

      • buy an ex taxi camry

        • Prefer the SUV shape due to my work requirements and getting things in and out of the boot all the time. But, I hear that the Camry is good.

  • Neither, they’re both SUV’s.
    Buy a proper car

  • How about keep the Kluger and buy BOTH of the other ones? that way you have more variety :D

  • Buy an i30 N.

  • Exterior of the Hyundai looks better, interior of the BMW looks better, imo.

  • Hyundai all the way!

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Highlander AWD Hybrid.

My Wife and I had a BMW X3 2009 and it cost us a lot as the kms added up. So we got rid of it and got a 2022 Hyundai Tuscon, couldn't be happier!

BMWs are costly when you need something fixed.

Would not touch a BMW or Audi with a ‘barge pole’! You cannot beat the Japanese or Korean cars for reliability, reasonable service costs.Don’t talk to me about Audi!

    Kluger or SantaFe.
    not the BMW.

BMW is a great drive but you will need to factor in high servicing costs $2kpa and up to another $5k for when the plastic engine components fail. Plus you’ll need to drive the diesel long and hard regularly or it’ll have issues. On a cost of ownership basis go the Hyundai or just keep the Kruger and invest in an appreciating not depreciating asset!

    Keep the kluger.

A few things to consider on the BMW

    • Does the BMW have the balance of a service plan? Many are sold with either a 4 or 5 year 60/80k service plan included (transferable to new owners) so servicing may be free for a couple of years (excludes brakes, tyres and wiper blades). Note standard oil change intervals are long (2 years, 25k) so pays to do oil changes every year/12,500k which means paying for this additional one at around $250 every two years.

    • Seems like low kms so it means possibly lots of short distance driving so not ideal on a diesel for longevity of engine life.

    • BMW are typically pretty good on statutory warranty / consumer law type claims, so if something goes wrong and the car is less than five years old and relatively low kms, they generally will fix it free of charge or with a very minimal charge.

    Hope this helps.

  • Santa Fe. Surely the price of a used 2022 is the same as placing an order for a new one? There's a new update model coming soon so that's the one to go for. If you are doing lots of highway driving, Diesel is the one to go for as hybrid system won't be doing much but adding weight at highway speed

Should also look into the Palisade, exterior and interior are better than Santa Fe and it has more space as a 7 seater.

If you don't mind the wait, get another Kluger, it had a recent interior update and it'll be years ahead in terms resell than Hyundai and BMW
