Spacetalk® Adventurer requires Nano SIM with voice calls, SMS and approximately 1GB data per month

The Spacetalk ® app requires a monthly in-app subscription at $5.99pm for up to 2 watches and $8.99pm for up to 5 watches.

    • Thanks for the added info.

cheaper to just get android watch e.g. samsung smart watch
and buy your own prepaid sim card or plan etc?

      • I don't think prepaid card works. Doest it?

        • can't you buy a 365 day plan or whatever?

or only get monthly plans for smart watches?

          • @pinkybrain: we got a $200 boost yearly prepaid and it worked fine.
but use jumpysim and you dont have to pay the $6 monthly subscription.

how many smart watches have the same functionality? limited contact access, video calling, no internet but connected, gps location tracking, emergency functions, school time functionality lockout?

No app subscription fee for JumpySIM

      https://spacetalk.co/pages/jumpysim

      • Still looks expensive

Does anyone have any actual experience with these things? I haven't read very many positive reviews about them and thinking an Apple Watch might be the better option for my littlies

You want your kids to get mugged?

      • +1

        How did you infer that?

        • I think it speaks for itself. He lives in a ghetto area and if you wear an apple watch in that area you will get mugged.

          • @MrMoo: Ethics aside… they'd have to be incredibly dumb to want to steal a device that is actively tracking its location and is specifically being used to notify someone else of the location and status of whoever has possession of it

            • @chartparker: Hah. Check out @chriso1 response. But yes all jokes aside you would have to be incredibly stupid to try to steal these.

              • +3

@MrMoo: Pro tip: kids ARE incredibly stupid.

Anyone under 13 would have either broken the $500 Apple watch, traded it for chips or had another kid throw it in the river as a prank before you'd even finished your afterpay payments. Anyone over that age doesn't need a tracking device.

The only person stupider than kids is people who give them expensive things with the expectation they won't be lost or destroyed.

                • @MagnamoniousRex: I got a secondhand Series 5 for $180… and my kids aren't in school yet. This is for when we go on outings cos the tykes love to run off when our backs are turned for even a second

Not everyone lives in Frankston mate

Good idea. I might go out after school this arvo and mug some kids wearing them, so i can give them to my kids.

    • Think you are correct. Use family sharing and Truephone esim .

My 10 year old and 8 year old have them. I did a fair bit of research before buying them and for the money seemed like the best bet. Both have ASD/ADHD and have a tendency to impulsively wander off.

I use telechoice for the sim. The monthly subscription cost sucks but at the end of the day $5 a month for the piece of mind is good.

They ride their bikes to and from school which is not far away and its really handy to have a way to let them contact us or us contact them. As well as see their location.

We leave the location updates at the least frequent which allows the battery to easily last a day (probably would make 2 days). I can ping the watch whenever I want to check their location.

Seems to be a good tool to give the kids more freedom whilst still having a emergency backup so they aren't completely flying solo.

      • Thanks for this. What’s the minimum update frequency?

        • +2

1 hour is the min but you can also just disable it.

  • do I need subscription for voice/sms/GPS tracking?

  • For GPS tracking, do you require SIM and in-app subscription ?

  • What is Open Wi-Fi ?

Are ALL calls video call? Can the video quality be changed?
Can calls and video calls be made over wi-fi networks when child is at home (or trusted location), or do they always use mobile data?
Isthere a 3.5mm headphone jack? (I read it has BT connectivity).
Can we use any mobile network, eg Coles Mobile or Amasim?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Based on experience the SpaceTalk support is woeful and prefer to upsell replacement rather than troubleshooting the issue.
Discovered the watch was missing a screw and that caused battery to not flushed internally and keep it turned on. They blamed that the device was mishandled or water damaged.
This was not the case, and if you held the back of the device the watch would work without a issue.
TLDR: support offer $$ refurb replacement rather this assist with simple screw replacement.

Also to note, there are different model which support different network band that can cause significant battery drain or locking you into Telstra or Optus network.
Additional subscription cost $5.99 pm + sim cost
Phone software was ok but would crash often - when setting up zones, location polling etc. (location tracking does lag)
Watch software and touch was okay and not as responsive as you would expect for a few hundred device.
Video feature some schools may not allow due to privacy

I would not recommend even though they are local.

    • This is the information I was looking for. Thanks so much! I think I’ll stick with Apple Watch family

      • +1

How do you disable all the smart features when they are at school? Many schools are banning smart watches.

Some other info with Apple watch Family is better in my eyes even if it's an older model with a little more pricey.
Watch build, great touch screen, software support is good.
You may want an extra screen protector or pay for apple care.

setting up find my zone is not as intuitive as other software on the market but managed
family watch mode for kids is some what limited in apps and usage compared to your phone sync'd watch+phone pairing.
my kid loves the watch, able to get it wet in the pool, health metrics, navigation, calls and sms.

One thing i will say is i have not worked out how to block unknown numbers if not on childs contact list which an offering SpaceTalk offered.

    • wowsers - not being able to block calls/messages from unknown numbers would be a no go for me
