  • while on the topic (Notes app), im in the middle of moving from evernote to onenote.
i just wondering if there is an free app note that has somekind of excel format instead of just plain doc style format? sometimes i want to create a note based on excel (more tidy, no need formulas etc just basic colour would be good). thanks

    • Google Sheets is free. Not sure about the Excel app either way. There would be other free spreadsheet apps.

You can embed your excel spreadsheets in OneNote

i see. and once we do that we can edit (add new entries) straight from onenote?

        • OneNote doesn’t support the use of individual Excel functions. However, it is possible to use some Excel-style features directly, rather than simply viewing a preview of your Excel data.

Might need to pay for a OneNote add-in (Gem) to use functions directly

          • @Wally: thanks! hmm maybe just create table withing onenote is sufficient for my usage. i just like the excel layout to make the notes easier to read

    • Maybe something like Notion?

      • i feel notion is overkill for just personal usage like mine but i'll have a look again later

        • I find the beauty with Notion is you don't have to use everything it offers and keep things simple

          • @alohadude: hmm the excel like feature i wanted, is it called database? just had a quick browse, seems good it let us filter etc

            • @CyberMurning: Yep, it's pretty powerful at what it does, and you can embed it on other pages too

    • There's always Collabora Office, which is the most official Android derivative of LibreOffice.

    • Excel is actually pretty good on Android, I find.

Was always free on F-Droid. After Signal killed off the SMS functionality, I moved to their SMS app and it is simple, as promised. Appears to be a freebie too on Google Play at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.simplemobi…

      Well, after Moxie left Signal,
      Signal has a new President
and she wants you to pay

      • Or donate. You don't have to pay if you donate.

    • I'm actually thinking of moving to something else. I did the same as you, but struggling with the way messages work. I get the notification, open the app either by clicking on the notification or opening the app, but then it takes forever for the message to show up, the rest of the chat is there.

Have you had any strange glitches?

  • be warned the simple File Manager does not offer recovery of any deleted file

  • If anyone has worked out how to close a document in the notes app without deleting it I would like to know!

How does this compare with the google apps?

    • They're pretty comparable feature-wise, but without the additional bonus privacy invasion of all your personal notes, messages, contacts and files being sent to a trillion dollar advertising company to profile you.
You could give them a try given they're free, and always switch back if you find something you don't like.

The Google versions have the advantage of syncing across devices though, including on a computer. Also note that many phone manufacturers don't use the Google apps anyway, they make their own versions, which may not send data either.
But yeah, these are free and worth checking out at least.

  • F-droid gives a warning about a security vulnerability in File Manager Pro. So unless the latest version came out in the last few days just wit till he fixes it

  • Wow, I totally forgot I had these from the last time they were free. Year or so ago.

  • Haven't used the other apps, but I have actually paid for Simple Gallery Pro, as I have found it to be the most clean and straightforward app for the simple act of viewing pictures on the phone. So I would recommend that.

  • How do I get this free as when I get to the app on playstore it asks to pay for it. just asking as the title reads as $0

    • Same $1.19

    • They're always free on F-Droid.

  • It's not free
