Ai Mesh Speed Penatly 250/25

So my current setup is a 250 download and 25 upload. I currently have a RT-AC68U which is running strong for about 8 years with no issues ( Apart from auto restarting it every day to keep high speeds, which also is flashed with Merlin). I was thinking of getting a used 86U off ebay for around $150 and creating an AiMesh network by using the old 68U as a node. Has anyone got a similiar setup and has anyone noticed any of their speeds decreasing or if it stays the same. I could not really find proper numbers but let's just say they have good strength

  • Works brilliantly here (use the 86U as the NBN router, connect the 68U via Ethernet and use in AIMesh Node mode)

Running Merlin on both without issue ;)

    • Thanks I will buy one tomorrow :)

  • You can buy Asus ROG GT-2900 for about $100 off FB market place which has almost identical hardware as AC86U.

I did use Asus ROG GT-2900 and AC68U as a node and it worked well.

Now I use two GT-2900 as I was able to buy another one

Edit: I read (don't know if its true) that the older versions of AC86U had some defect

Might be better off to save $ and buy the GT-2900 considering it now has merlin firmware support

  • My previous setup consisted of the ASUS AX88U meshed to a much older ASUS DSL-AC68U.

Even though it is only Wifi 5 it was fast enough that it didn't bottleneck a 100mbit NBN fiber connection. But it wasn't good enough for high bitrate video streaming to my Oculus Quest headset

I've upgraded the old DSL-AC68U to a ASUS RT-AX55 and with Wifi-6 the streaming has improved quite a bit.

ASUS has a EOFY sale on some routers, including the ASUS RT-AX53U for only $109. It can run Merlin firmware. But not the AX55.
