    300 TBW just FYI

Not an issue - 970 Evo Plus 500GB with DRAM is also 300 TBW

The 980 is the NVMe equivalent of the BX500 - name brand and cheap price so perfect as a budget boot drive or to revive old machines

The WD Green SN350 480GB with 60 TBW is the one to avoid

Samsung released 980 more to compete with SN550 originally, now SN570. BX500 has NAND lottery and QLC could be the norm for larger size BX500.

Due to the controller, it can beat the earlier batch of 970 Evo Plus in some tests (though the current batch addressed that issue). Sustained write is a weakness for 980, but WD did do a dodgy NAND swap for SN550 (got caught and stopped selling it). 980 does provide AES 256-bit encryption.

For Gen 3 500GB SSD, 300 TBW is not that bad. For example, Crucial P2 500GB SSD had TBW of 150, while similar size Crucial P3 has TBW of only 110.

That's hardly a problem. My primary 1TB SSD w/ 3354 days of power-on time still only has 169TB written to it.

  • Their eBay store has it for $48 plus free postage.

…….or if an Ebayplus member and have the $5 off coupon, shows as $43.

  • Is this the drive that needs immediate firmware update to prevent early failure?

    • +1

      thats the 980 pro

According to Samsung, no. However, according to the Chinese forum, yes. Generally, for Samsung SSDs (actually for all SSDs), upgrade the firmware if possible.

It is possible the 2023 batches already have a later or latest firmware.

      • Yeah I picked one up a few weeks ago direct from the Samsung education store and it came with the latest firmware already installed

  • Looking for a cheap gen4 drive with DRAM… 500 GB is okay … but <50$

  • $39 for 500gb. Looking at falling ssd prices its surprising apple are still charging $300 for a 256gb ssd storage boost to 512gb on their new laptops.

    • +2

its apple, they can do what ever they want

    • +2

      Not surprising at all.

    • They'd sooner increase the more expensive storage options than change the price difference. So it's 512GB vs 2TB, 4TB.

  • Will a M.2 SSD with DRAM stop my transfer speeds from fluctuating between 0MB/s and 1GB/s?
Sometimes the speed drops down to 40-60MB/s and stays there for the entire transfer.

    • It sounds like a lack of DRAM. This model doesn't have DRAM.

      • thanks

  • how do I install this? will I have a spare slot?

    Will this work on PS5?

    • This SSD is a lot slower than the PS5 minimum read requirements.

      • And it's gen 3 right?

  • Good start for an OS drive for my new build

    • Better than a hard drive I guess…

$14 post to perth means the one on amazon is a better deal $48
