HDD Data Recovery - Head Crash

I have a hard drive with photos on it, it crashed about 10 years ago and I'm looking to recover the data. I got a quote a few years ago from Payam, I was quoted $1500 at the time and based on the link it appears to now cost $1750+. I couldn't afford it at the time but I'm now looking to proceed with the recovery, but I'd still rather not pay $1750+.

Does anyone have a recommendation for cheaper options - they don't necessarily need to be Australian based.

  • I've tried searching for similar info in the past - same situation as you right now.

Not sure if there's much more available in Aus, would be interested to hear about international options.

Just recover them from your backup drive.

both drives involved in a head on crash.

Heavy rain caused a data leak from the cloud backup.

I have heard / read that this sometimes works (temporarily).
You will need a powered caddy with usb
    1. place hard drive in a zip seal bag
    2. place in the freezer for a couple of hours
    3. quickly remove, place in caddy, plug in usb to pc / laptop, power up the caddy

This 'may' help access the drive contents, but only until the drive heats up.
    Good Luck

    • I tried this years ago and it didn't work, and I also tried disc recovery software. Thanks for the advice but I'm not looking for any hacks anymore, I'll leave it to the pros

      • If you did the freezer trick then your drive is dead, it is a last resort option even after trying to get professional data recovery services.

Also the sooner you do the recovery the better your chances, 10 years is pretty much donzo.

    Its dead Jim……

Honestly I don't like your chances of recovery after all this time. When you say 'crashed' what do you mean? The drive stopped working? The file system is corrupted?

    • Ticking hard drive, it has been confirmed by Payam as a head crash. They said chances of recovery were good.
I was worried about further degradation if the recovery wasn't performed immediately, Payam advised that the disk isn't likely to degrade any further if I leave it sitting on a shelf (in an anti-static bag)

    Try these guys https://www.ontrackdatarecovery.com.au.
I have used them before for a mobile data recovery job and they were great. Prices seemed reasonable as compared to a few that I tried in Melbourne back then.

Used these guys in the past year or two as well. They were excellent. Recovered 2 x 10TB drives that died in a power surge, they provided all of the data back on external storage drives as well as giving back the faulty drives for me to RMA.

They allowed a preview online of all of your files that you could view in a browser to ensure everything was listed, like a file explorer in the browser after entering a password to view it.

Could not fault their service, excellent communication all the way and all done within a short timeframe.

  • I work in data recovery, what is the exact model of the drive?
