You’re in luck. OzBargain is actually looking for a new moderator to make sure relevant information is added to new forum posts. That way, things such as:

    Location
    What are your interests, hobbies?
What do you currently enjoy at school?
What do you want to do after school?

are included and you actually get some useful answers.

    • We aren't looking for new moderators. If we were, you would see a forum thread posted by scotty. It's also not possible for us to offer "work experience" or any sort of on-the-job training, since moderation is kind of an innate skill (or even a personality trait) and not really something you can teach someone.

Also "OZB moderator" listed under "work experience" would probably illicit laughter from a hiring manager who saw it on a CV.

And you may have missed tosh's joke..

I reckon discord mod is a bit more shiny on the CV

        • +13

mods missing jokes, that must be part of the

innate skill (or even a personality trait)

Is it like using gaming experience as leadership examples on your resume?

Frequently acted as in-game lead for my five-man CS GO/Dota 2/LOL team to achieve a win rate of 80%.

Whoosh….. As @toshjammi post went over everyones head….

      • +3

Man - did I want to work as a full time 100k+ a year ozb mod. I got rejected without even applying 😂

    • -2

You forgot "ability to read sarcasm".

I'd also argue that allowing a 15 YO person to post 'looking for anything' is a veritable minefield of duty of care. Get parents to canvas online or directly to potential job experience.

Wonder how many other members signed up at 13/14 YO? Or younger

      • OP signed up 2 years ago as well…

        • -2

and so OP is 15 (or thereabouts now)

          What;s actual YOUR point?

          • @Protractor: Did I need a point? I was responding to your statement:

Wonder how many other members signed up at 13/14 YO? Or younger

            Relax

  • +1

    Lol what next?

  • +8

You might want to be a bit more explicit in what areas you want experience.

    • +1

Just summat that's going to lead to a $100k+ offer at the end of the week of work experience.

      Thanks bro

      So jealous of you,'bro'.

  • Just hit up Coles/Woolies; they are always keen for student work experience program.

Hey, I am looking for high school Year 10 work experience, anyone know any places or contact details I can get in touch with?

See @toshjammi post above, no one here can help you if you don't provide any details on what you like to do.

Generally work experience is best if aligned with your career goals or interest.

As you have given zero details, no one can really provide anything of value.

    • Sorry m8, I should've made it clear but I was looking at any field other than Coles or Woolies. I was looking more for contact dets but that might be out of the question now.

      • There isn't really a recruitment agency that you can really use to find work experience jobs, not at the entry level anyway. Recruitment agencies won't bother talking to you because they expect a commission and they won't make any money from referring you. The NSW gov website recommends talking to your "career advisor" and teachers.

If you don't have anyone to ask, a valid tactic is just simply walking in to see their manager and asking for a job or sending out as many emails to places as possible.

The most common types of jobs that don't require experience is usually:

        • retail (grocery stores, fruit shops) where you restock shelves, work as a cashier and all the usual stuff like in store logistics.
        • charity orgs. they usually need staff for basic tasks and fundraising
        • fast food (Subway / KFC etc)
        • the local sports clubs.
        • the school that you attend might be willing to give you some work experience.
        • the local vet / clinic
        • office assistant for law firms or solicitors. This is probably going to be a dull job but may still offer things for you to learn.

If you can't get work experience then the best thing to do with your spare time is to learn something. e.g learn how to use Shopify and set up your own dropshipping business then make your own money that way.

        • Thankyou! I was after a High School work experience role (only 5 days), not an actual job. But I got your message

          • +1

@TRISTANAU: Some Zoos offer work experience placements for short term. 5 days.

            https://www.zoo.org.au/about-us/careers/school-work-experien…

            Some key details for applicants:

The program is 5 full days, and in all weather
Attendance dates for the successful students will be available over each term
Successful students will be required to perform physically demanding manual labour duties under supervision
Applications from secondary students are accepted one year in advance

Applications are currently CLOSED for Melbourne Zoo, Healesville Sanctuary and Werribee Open Range Zoo. Work experience applications for these properties in 2024 will open in August 2023. Keep an eye on this page for any updates.

Some museums also offer work experience, worth a search or a phone call to see what is available.

  • contact your local morgue or police station, they offer really in-depth work experience

  • -1

I would reckon you could apply at somewhere like Woolworths/Coles, and if you find it's not too bad, you could always stay on as a casual or part time. But I would imagine Woolworths and Coles would love to exploit cheap labour.

Or you could also apply for places like Bakers Delight. You get free bread at the end of the day (if there are leftovers which there will almost certainly be).

  • What are you interested in? Aim for the sky.

    • I am literally desperate I emailed 30ppl got rejected on all LMAO, Ill take anything but my dignity wont let me do coles

      • +4

I emailed 30ppl got rejected on all LMAO

Have you taken a step back and asked yourself (or your parents) why this is the case?

        • yes - 90% of them think I want an actual job

      • +2

30 sounds like a lot of applications to be rejected from for year 10 work experience.

Agree with CrispyChrispy in that maybe you want your folks to look over how you’re emails are structured etc.

        • Yea, it's tough but most are either unavailable/ filled or have 0 clue what work experience is and either can't help or insist that I am looking for a job. I learned the real lesson of applying for jobs, I should become a professional job applier

      • +2

        Seriously?

Can you post your email? Sounds like it will need a bit of a tweak.

  • +1

Work experience is, usually, designed to give you some idea on what your future career is going to be. I was interested in being a solicitor so my parents arranged for me to go work in a solicitors office for a short period of time. I don’t think I got paid and mostly what I did was filing. Are you trying to get some experience in a career you, ultimately, want to work in or are you looking for part time work for money? When I was at Uni I signed on to a mob that did stocktake work. You had to contact them, promptly, to see if there was work on but the pay wasn’t bad. You went into a store, or factory, after hours and did the stocktake for the company. Basically counting items and writing them down. Not sure if you will be considered too young but it might be worth looking up.

    • +2

      Its for highschool purposes

      • +3

So you have a mandatory component to do work experience? If so don’t they provide you with some assistance to get a short term job?

      • Of course it is, but as said previously its so you get an insight into a career you're interested in

So… What are you interested in doing after high school? I'm quite sure it's not coles/ww

  • What type of industry are you looking for?

    • IT, Management, Finance, Education, Real estate, anything really that isn't Coles or woolies 💀

      • What about Maccas?

        • Cant tell if this is a joke lmao

      • Hi,

Be aware that Coles and/or Woolies have IT, Management, Finance, Education and Real Estate…

Maybe not at your local Supermarket, but higher up the structure.

Have a look at https://www.scentregroup.com (previously Westfield) as they are pretty much everywhere or even https://www.evt.com

Also, “Do what you’ll love, and you’ll never work another day in your life.” :+)

        • thanks mate for the help

      • What area are you based in?

        • Northern suburbs, melbourne

  • +1

Keeping in mind that this is a public forum and you are a minor you do not want to give too much information about yourself to others.

You need to be quite reflective here.

    Ask yourself the following questions:

In the future do you see yourself doing a trade or going to uni?

If you do not have a clue yet that is perfectly ok. So much pressure is put on high school students to know what they want to do which makes it very hard if you don't know yet. If this is you, your work experience you need to consider something quite open ended. You never know it might spark a new interest and life direction that could be beneficial to you in the future. Remember, this work experience can be added to your CV.

What do you like to do? Are you an outdoors person? Do you prefer the indoors?

My advice would be as follows:

Contact the following places to see if they will take you. Often they will.

Your local council/shire - admin duties, ranger
    The mining sector
    Local op shop
    Nursing homes/Aged Care
    Vet
    TV stations
    Radio stations
    Your old primary school
    Local physio, OT, Chiro
    Gym
    Real estate agents
One of your friends parents work place
    Emergency Services
    Florist
    Mechanic
    Plumber
    Dog/cat rescue
    The zoo
    Museum
    tour guides
    Hotel chains

Based on what you have said above, it sounds like your letter to them might need a bit of a tweak before your contact them. Also, Calling them first is often a good idea because it humanises you.

    • Great thanks

    Howdy Tristianau,

You mentioned you are in Melbourne, so here is some work experience information I found for Victoria. https://www2.education.vic.gov.au/pal/work-experience/policy

On that site, there is a link to a comprehensive PDF guide. Please have a read, as it outlines what happens from an educational perspective. Your school should help with this.

Companies who understand the work experience concept may not want to support it due to the cost. The cost is not the stipend you are paid; it is the cost of you being there, as work experience is literally that - an experience (yours). Companies show you what a "day in the life of X" is, and to do that, the company may need to spend about $4000 for the week. That spend includes the preparation (if it is to be done well), allocating someone (perhaps several people) to show you what they do (and accepting the reduced productivity).

You experience work. You don't actually do it (in any true sense); however, you will help out in a limited capacity. Work experience is NOT supposed to be cheap labour.

So, what this could mean (likely not) is that the companies whom you contacted understood the cost and ran a mile.

As an idea, you may want to contact trade organisations who can introduce you to companies that have invested in work experience programs.

    So consider contacting:

    Good luck.

  • Hi Tristan,

Not sure what Vic offers but in SA, the Department for Education itself will take Year 10 and 11s for not only work experience but also school based traineeships.

I have seen students in Year 10 start a Cert III in IT and work in the IT department at a school 1 day a week. You can also do Librarianship, Administration and SSO traineeships.

In SA, these all count for VET and SACE. Bonus, they all end up with in demand jobs that you can do while studying.

Ask your career advisor. Good luck 👍
