TP-LINK TL-SG116E 16 Port Network Switch Unmanaged Gigabit Ethernet (VLAN Capable) $89 + Post ($0 Perth C&C) @ Austin Computers

80

Not sure about shipping costs but free collect in Perth from Austin Computers. I recently started an OpnSense router journey and setup Proxmox on one of the Ali Mini PCs with 4 Ethernet Ports. Planning to run Own Cloud as a VM as well so VLAN Tagging is a must to segregate traffic. This seemed to be a good choice - not a fully managed switch but has the ability to configure MTU VLAN, port-based VLAN and 802.1Q-based VLAN functions.'

Seems like a really good price for a metal 16 port 10/100/1000 smart switch.

  • Am I correct in thinking these are fanless? I am looking for something quiet.

    • +1

Yes, I can confirm it's fanless. Good solid metal case as well

  • What's the use case? Why would you segregate traffic at home? Gaming?

    • +9

For segregating security cameras / IOT devices / guest wifi networks.

Depending on the use-case this could be for isolating devices from the rest of your internal network, or creating a network segment that doesn't have internet access (stop devices from "phoning home"), or both.

Thank you for this comprehensive answer 👍🏾

    • If you have a router with only one ethernet port (like the Google Nest Wifi), you will need a switch to connect all your wired devices like cameras, computers, smart TV, servers etc.

Amazon reviews show a number of reports of instability of this switch. Requiring restarts periodically. One user resolved the issue by buying the non E version, which doesn't support VLAN groups etc.

Any recommendations on a 16 port Gigabit POE switch?

  • Thorwing my hat in the discussion.

Got into Omada SDN few months ago and managed to get this "TL-SG2210MP" for ~$157. 8 port poe gigabit ports with 2 port gigabit sfps.

Very stable through summer in my garage on South side of the home (~40c+). Only wished I'd get some 2.5gbe switch for Omada SDN that doesn't cost more than what I can get for my kidneys… :)

    • How noisy is the fan in this switch? I'm thinking of getting some Omada stuff, tossing up between the TL-SG2210MP and TL-SG2210P (fanless, only 61w POE budget) and TL-SG2016P (16 port, POE, fanless, expensive)

Well, I tried to hear it over my NAS / Router next to it. For me, I couldn't isolate the unit's fan noise if it makes sense. My suggestion will be, if you can live with 65W (plenty for home use for APs) go fanless! Of-course if you're looking to hook up PoE cameras to it, then you'll have to budget carefully..

  • Any recomendations on a managed switch with STP, VLAN and POE?
