Having a GSYNC Module Monitor Worth Going for Nvidia Instead of AMD?

I have a WFHD Alienware AW3418HW monitor running on an ageing 2060 + 9400F. Considering to upgrade the GPU to either a 6700xt or the 3060ti. The monitor has a Gsync module installed. Not freesync compatible or gsync “compatible”. Is it worth going for Nvidia despite AMD being the better bang for the buck?

  • I'm not sure I understand you question in it's entirety, but IMO having variable frame rate is the biggest advance in recent years, more important than ray tracing or 4k that's for sure.

I wasn't aware that AMD still don't support GSync. I would have though the companies would have given up trying to lock people out of each other's 'standards' by now, unless it's just that AMD couldn't be bothered.

I am running a pretty basic Acer freesync monitor with low latency with an nVidia 2600. Colour reproduction may not be fantastic and it's only 1080p… but I'll take that over screen tearing and locked frame rates or messing around with vSync settings to try to make games playable. Also one of many reasons I stopped using game pass since Microsoft insiting developers remove relevant settings from games essentially invalidating my setup.

    • +1

AMD can't support GSYNC hardware (not GSYNC compatible which is basically FreeSync) because it's proprietary.

      • You are correct in that initially Gsync required a property chip in the monitor, and Freesync didn’t.

However, Nvidia has opened up support to run Gsync on certain Freesync monitors now. (I guess under the hood they are just using Freesync under their Gsync interface).

In any cases, if you have one of those monitors then they will technically support Gsync and Freesync.

(Edit: after reading your comment again, it seems we are both saying the same thing, but I’ll leave my comment up anyway)

    • So I have an AW3418HW monitor which is an ultrawide FHD Gsync module (so no freesync), running on a 2060. Would it be worth to go Nvidia again even though the 6700xt has a much better value than the 3060ti just for the ability to run Gsync?

      • Yes.

  • Do you notice the difference if you disable Gsync on your current system? If not then you might as well get the 6700xt. On the other hand if you can't stand it, you would need to get an nvidia card to keep using Gsync.

    • I would be able to test this out in several days from now, will report back!
