Brisbane QLD 1st July Power Rises - I Found Nectr Cheapest Lock in before 1st July

I found this to be a good bargain for me living in Brisbane QLD with power charges going up from 1st July. I was previously will Alinta and using a previous bill with the new price increase my bill was going up 38% if I did nothing. I also don’t have Gas so might not be a great deal if you do as they don’t offer that.

I found Nectr who do not charge a demand charge like Alinta do.. and they offer energy price lock in for 12 months when you sign up so I signed up before 1st July so I got below rates.

Changing over using the same previous bill I will now see an increase in power costs but only a 20% rise.. so trying to make the best of a bad situation.

Please make sure to run the numbers against old bills to confirm this is a good deal for you vs any changes to your current power plan from 1st July.

Nectr 100% Clean

Solar FIT - 3.85
All Day Usage - 23.98
Supply Charge - 99
No Demand Charge

Their is a referral system to get $50 off but I know that’s against the rules so hopefully you can also find a code because Ozb life means if can save you should.

I also couldn’t post this as a deal :(

  • Somwhat better than my AGL quote at 25.38c with supply 123.18c + demand 15.23c/KW/day. Roll on 1-July when we can all do a fresh comparison.

    • Have you received an email about the price rise yet?

      • Affirmative, rising from 17.74 to 25.38 (incl. GST)

        • Ah right, mine was 20.96 to 27.981. Supply charges went up to 140.239. Also with AGL, including GST

Nectr has been pretty good for QLD, I check the govt compare site once in a while to see if anyone is able to beat their rates.

For anyone that needs a referral, they can use the referral generator. This will then send a message to a member and ask for their referral link via message.

I must have done the maths wrong. I came from Alinta, but I thought based on the prices you have shown above prices will remain about the same for the next 12 months on Nectr, not 20% extra.

What were your rates on Alinta?

Also people on Alinta were sent a text recently saying Don't go anywhere, stay at Alinta where we will give you a great new price on 1st of July…. Hmm so after the cut off date for the 12 month locked in deal on Nectr. That's very slippery of Alinta. We have no idea what their incredible new 1st of July rates are and because they haven't gone early like Nectr you can bet they'll be crap and they are being deceptive (speculative ofcourse)

    • +2

In terms of current prices, Nectr is not the best offer for most people probably. Everyone's 1 July prices look to be going up a lot though, so I switched because it is a little bit more than I am paying now, but locked in for 12 months.

If there is a better price after July, can always switch again, but it would likely be not fixed.

      • Alinta's rates are going from 23c to 35c per kw on 1st of July for all day rate and they are keeping their peak surcharge, think it's an extra 15c per kw.
Alinta seem to have gone from the bargain choice to no better than AGL and the other big companies. I guess that is what happens when user base is big enough, they know a certain percentage of people won't bother leaving. But I expected them to be better than that

      • I did exactly this

    • Alinta already sent an email that prices are going up 30%

      • +1

I think it was last night or the night before, they sent the text saying stay with Alinta for your special prices on 1st of July, but as you say it seems like marketing BS. If you stay with Alinta you get to pay 30% more, nothing special about that

  • Solar FIT of only 3.85c/kw is not very good. Is there anyone who does above 5c in QLD?

    • +3

Soon enough you'll have to pay to feed in your power.

    • +1

Plenty do but most now limit how much you can export. So if you've got a big system that feeds a lot KW back into the grid you'll hit your cap early and the FIT drops.

If your household uses a lot of electricity while the sun is down then Nectr's low rates will be the better deal.

    • +3

Yes the FIT is lower, but I found the cheaper daily supply charge and peak rates mean I am still better off compared to other providers because I didn’t export enough to offset the premium they charge on other fronts.

    • Alinta gives 8c/kwh for Solar FIT.

  • Thanks for the post will keep checking.

  • I found Nectr who do not charge a demand charge like Alinta do.. and they offer energy price lock in for 12 months when you sign up so I signed up before 1st July so I got below rates.

I'm with Nectr and have a smart meter. Nectr offer me a competitive traditional single rate tariff with controlled load. AGL / Origin / Alinta will only offer me a plan with a demand charge, which really doesn't suit me.

  • This is what Alinta sent me which made me start looking -

  • I locked in with Nectr - cheaper then where energy australia were going to end up and the locked in rate and no exit fee is a safe hedge against the rises coming in July.

  • Thanks Benson. This is a much better offer than my current provider was prepared to offer me.

  • Switched from Alinta to Nectr a couple of days as well as it's much cheaper. Will see how it goes for a few months. Hopefully they don't go bust.

  • +1

Thanks Benson, this post made me realise my laziness in actively finding better prices on things like services.
Currently with Alinta and was going to cop the big price rises (peak 23.199 to 32.670. Controlled load 19.36 to 23.507. Daily 109.076 to 129.371).
Just signed up to nectr same deal as you. My solar FIT will drop from 6c to 3.85c but I will most likely save that anyway with the new prices. I also use most of my solar through the day.

    • And think of the positive, I bet Alinta will now work hard to win our business back after July 1st well that’s what I am hoping.

  • Just a word of warning. I signed up with Nectr online yesterday and this morning I received an email saying my application was declined due to failure to meet credit requirements. I'm struggling to work out what they base this off as my credit scores are excellent with payments always made on time and no defaults. They referenced Equifax being used to do the credit check but my score with them is excellent with no issues.

  • Does it actually lock in? Their doco states fixed rates until July 2023, and they have already published their new rates which are very high: https://nectr.com.au/blog/1-july-2023-rate-update/

    They changed the wording from:

Energy rates fixed for 12-month period

    to ;

Fixed Electricity rates until 30 Jun 2023

So I guess it's locked for 12 months, but only if you get in before 30 jun

  • Can someone confirm if I sing up before July 1 I will get cheaper rates locked in for 12 months ?

    • I emailed them and they said yes, but never hurts to check yourself -

I emailed them via below -

Please email us at [email protected] or call us at 1300 111 211 during business hours.

      • Yeah I will give them a call to confirm . Too bad I missed out on even cheaper rates that you posted . Still beats Origin by a mile. Cheers

    • Yeah lots of others have been complaining on the form that locked in for 12m isn't really locked in. It's locked in relative to reference price, so lots of locked plans are getting 30% bumps in price on 1st july

      • I switched to Nectr when Reamped dumped all its customers last year. A year later and my plan pricing is the same as the welcome email they sent me in May 2022 (tariff 11 18.92c/kWh, CL2 15.95c/kWh, supply 88.00c/day)

This month they sent me an email notifying me of upcoming price increases:

"Your benefit period of fixed electricity rates is ending.

Thanks for your continued loyalty to Nectr. We are writing to you today as your benefit period of fixed electricity rates is ending. This means that your current electricity rates with Nectr, which have been fixed since 30th June 2022, are due to expire on 29th June 2023. It's therefore time for you to choose a new electricity plan."

So my rates were fixed for 12 months. The plan T&Cs might have changed since then. Probably best to call them for a definite answer

  • Well my experience today as an existing Nectr customer is this: they said they have extended my plan (100% clean, same price as detailed above) until 14/7/23. 1-2 weeks before that, they will send out their best offer for the next 12 months fixed price; although they cannot guarantee it will be the same as now. I’d rather think it is almost certain there will be a price hike. So it appears that they are discriminating against current customers if OP is able to lock in the current price for the next 12 months.

Can anyone recommend a better option for Brisbane?

    • that's strange, AFAIK my 22/23 plan ended in May they sent me details of a new plan offer that I'd move to automatically the rates should be through to May 24, can anyone confirm as I haven't heard otherwise and I did message them at the time

      Nectr Hive Saver plan.
      General usage charge 20.900
Supply charge - General Usage 92.400

also strangely my estimated bill to 23 June is seriously underestimated, like not even close to my normal usage

      • I’ve been with Nectr for a couple of years and have been moved to the Nectr Hive Saver plan also. My bills are still very cheap (about $60 a month for a one person apartment).
        My plan says
        General usage charge 20.900
        Supply charge $0.924 per day

I did get a similar recent email that my energy plan is ending soon but they’ve extended ‘my benefits’ to 14/07/2023. They were meant to send the new plan details but I haven’t received anything further from them about that. Definitely a bit weird.

        • I've had nothing to give any dates just that I moved to the Hiver Saver plan once I finished the 12 months, cannot find any details or T&C's / Plan specifics but read to me like it was for a further 12 months

  • They have removed the 100% carbon neutral plan damn

  • I am with OVO but haven't had any notification of price rises yet too. Bit worrying

  • Switched and thanks for the post.

  • Does anyone know if if comes up on your credit report when you sign up?

    • Yes it does. Had a credit check flagged the day after I signed up to Nectr. @Rodger1

Nectr have increased the price on this plan preemptively since the 22nd unfortunately. Does anyone know if there are any other fixed rate plans?

Yep - there supply charge has increased to 143.76 and all day usage to 34.82. It's a no deal now:
